what's the difference between florist roses and garden roses?
Comments (16)cleangeek, thanks for the link to the video. florist roses do have thorns. There tend to be less thorns right underneath the flower before you get to the first set of leaves . in the video that you linked to, there were actually red thorns lower down on the stem when they were picking the roses . Admittedly they're not super thorny varieties. But they're not actually thornless . One of the handling techniques discussed in a California grown video was to pick the longest roses first, lay them on your arm, then pick ever shorter roses to put on top. that way the flowers on shorter stems don't get punctured by the thorns of taller stems surrounding them . Florists and rose arrangers use a gadget called a stem stripper to remove thorns: This stem stripper is stainless steel. It will instantly remove the leaves and thorns from fresh roses. This tool is very commonly used in the floral industry and is a necessity for anyone working with roses. Length is approximately 4.5 inches. the description was for a professional one being sold by a wholesale florist supply website, but you can buy plastic and metal stem strippers from Amazon. I have used thorn strippers; I don't think they're worth the bother. That may be because I had to handle rose and I was the end-user as well . If someone else handled the rose to strip off the thorns for me, I might feel differently. the video from Holland also mentioned part of what makes their roses a premium product is they allow the flowers to open a bit further on the plant . It reminds me of the premium tomatoes which are closer to ripe when they're packed . I remember people being astonished at seeing the cut garden roses my husband brought to work actually open up until you could see stamens . Apparently florist roses tend not to open to that extent before they wither. as home rose gardeners, we're probably baffled at how much the price of roses is determined by the length of stems, all the way to superexpensive 5 foot stemmed roses....See MoreWhat is the difference between Star Roses and Weeks Roses
Comments (11)That was super frustrating I was out in the Sacramento area and I could not get to photos to sync or post and I could not get the Facebook to send a message to Star Roses, but when I got home to my desk top, I could do it. Here is the French Lace. I had Dark Night and I did not take a photo, but it also had two canes that were bright red that grew up in the wrong way. Now I really wish I had a photo of that Dark Night. I really wish this is spring dwarfism. I have more photos, but I can't find that camera right now. I took these with my phone. But, the photos in that camera show other of the roses near it was some signs of it, but nothing as extreme as this one. I hope I can find at some point and post those. Unfortunately the link posted looks nothing like Dwarfism due to Mosaic and in big huge letters it says, THIS PAGE IS BEING WRITTEN. PLEASE DISREGARD THE INFORMATION ON ROSE MOSAIC VIRUS BELOW. If I saw the rose listed as in the photo, there I would think that is ok, and proably buy it. I like to buy sickly plants and nursery them back to health to show up my skills, but that Dark Night did not give me anything to go with. Like the photos I have, it had no leaves at all and only witches brooms instead of leaves and the nursery seller has been tricked by the Star Rose Rep into leaving those plants right next to all the healthy ones. We are not able to reason with Nursery Owner who probably does not use the Internet and does not know or care very much about roses either....See MoreSome roses and perennials today in Alberta, Canada
Comments (21)vaporvac: My Radio Times is A WIDE & HUGE bush, needs room. HMF has a few bush-shots of Zaide, much healthier than Radio Times, but Radio Times beat Zaide in perfection of bloom & fantastic damask scent. Both are thorny. Below is the list of top 115 most healthy roses compiled by New York Botanical Garden. Zaide and Viking Queen are on the list, same with Buck Quietness and Heritage: http://www.nybg.org/gardens/rose-garden-top-performers-2010.php Question for everyone: I'm getting tired of thorns, it's actually the dense-prickles that get to me. I don't mind widely-spaced thorns like Sonia Rykiel, Frederic Mistral, or Crown Princess Mag ... it's the dense-prickles that I mind. Which one of your roses have the least thorns or widely spaced thorns? Thanks. Also what are your best-bush-beauty roses? My vote go to Marie Pavie & Daly as best-bush beauty, same with Perle'd Or & Clouide Soupert & Pat Austin & Tchaikosky & Bolero & Evelyn and anything with glossy & shiny foliage and continuous blooms....See MoreWhat is the difference between a carpet rose and a drift rose??
Comments (10)I love the hot pink carpet one. Boy I would have them going along the entire length of our fence at the back :D But not sure if the ones whom own the senior building would allow it. Also too I have yet to see any of them in our garden centers here. But maybe I could keep an eye out for one next year as well as an Aurora borealis. Would have better luck getting the last one I bet. My bus trips are limited during the week due to the corona virus crisis Also too anybody that had a vehicle to get any had an advantage over my having to take the bus. Finding it hard too to find the hanging planters of flowers. Seemed they all went as fast as what the toilet paper did:) Usually can get one from Walmart but not this year. Only other way is to buy an empty hanging basket and buy like some sun type begonias or impatiens or wave petunias and some dirt and do one myself....See Morerosecanadian
