Remodeling Design Dilemma Exterior

How would you update & modernize this exterior?

I have cleaner pictures of the home we are remodeling. (pics in comments) We are wanting to give it a face-lift with Stucco, beams, taking some rock out, etc but need ideas. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions & designs or if you could draw over these pictures with your idea, even better. Thank you all.

I likely will be naming the styles incorrectly (someone will correct me). It seems that you have a federal style house with some random Victorian "gingerbread" thrown on via the door and porch detail. I would follow Beth H's suggestions for door style, remove the railings/balusters (both upper and lower) on the porch. If you want to keep a railing across the porch instead of leaving it open, choose something simpler with wider spaced balusters -- but I would leave it open to show off the windows. Leave the triangle above the doorway neutral. I've seen those painted in with a color, along with the flanking pillars, but with a basic black and white scheme there wouldn't be anything that would connect to so I don't think that would work. PS Would you consider a pale creamy white instead of white white on the trim?

Dated exterior needs help. how would you update porch, columns etc.?

I would suggest adding a wide band of trim just above where the tops of the columns meet the wall. This should give the illusion of a beam being supported by the columns. The columns seem a bit undersized. I think I would replace them but instead of plain square columns I would give them a brick base with a brick or stone cap. I "might" suggest painting the entire house the same color - brick and siding but you should really give some thought to that. Once painted, brick can never be unpainted. It is a lovely house and a great lot. I LOVE the mature trees. Good luck!

Screening in the porch might protect you from mosquitoes or plants from bugs, but it's definitely not going to improve the appearance of the house. The pyramid steps invite a landing all around the base of the porch. If the last step is flush with grade, it is the landing. Then, it should be much deeper (wider) than other steps ... probably something like 3' minimum. While the title is asking about suggestions for modernization, I'm not sure that's the right direction to go. I'd suggest just upgrading the quality and have things look more finished ... of whatever period the architecture already suggests, not necessarily "modern." There is an obvious need for a defined parking area, a connecting approach from it to the house, and some planting ... especially a tree or two. We're not looking at a good view in order to be able to tell best what's needed. For that, take pictures straight on to the house front, with the camera lined up with the center of the house. Be about 25' away. Take a series of slightly overlapping photos while panning the camera. (Do not change camera location.) Extend scene far enough to sides that we could see the neighboring houses in the background if there were some. (We know there are not.)

I hope you're very careful about any changes you do make because your house has great dignity and style the way it is and it'd be a shame to destroy that. What about painting just the trim an unexpected color, like sky blue, that would brighten, refresh, and modernize the exterior but with little cost and no big changes? I live in California, and houses with this architecture and size are mostly in the expensive neighborhoods, so they're on the rare side, and maybe that's why I value your style of house so much.

I’d go board and baton, some soding or some white wash brick. Paint the trim black. Extend the front porch and door area. Add a gorgeous black or brown wood door and matching color garage door. New walkway and landscape

We've been thinking a craftsman or mid century modern style. Really though, whatever matched the house. We read about different designs & see it but don't know how to apply it to this house without seeing it on it.

The roof is brown which is ok. But would look awesome if it was metal. Or even black. I also found a few inspiration pics of what I was describing. They’re not the exact layout and size as your place. But just to see the look and idea. I love this!!

The house can be swayed either way in my opinion. More farm/ craftsman.... or mcm. I like the farmy style better. It’s just cozier and warmer. But obviously up to you. Lots of people will suggest the mcm also. You’ll hear all sides and all ideas here lol

It is already midcentury modern. Clean it up--it'll look great. The brown trim can be updated to something currently fashionable--see if a charcoal gray will play nicely with the stone. A mossy green would be nice. I'm not sure if the siding should be the same or a different color--just that it should be changed.

Mind if I ask where approximately this is located? It is not your everyday MCM! I'm wondering if the half-timbered stone look is common out there. It's very cool.

In person it looks pretty drab. We are in Oklahoma City.. This area has quite a few homes built between the 40s and 70s 😊

It looks a little drab in the photos too, to be honest. But it has huge potential just based on what it was born with.

I think it’s cute. I like all the stone. I think I would beef up the entryway a bit. Get a pendant light, perhaps. More than anything I think you need landscaping and perhaps some exterior/landscape lighting. I like the very neat landscape style you see with a lot of MCM houses. For example, this one:
