Seeking Great Quality Black & White Tile--Glazed or Honed Marble
Comments (1)These baths have all been done with the same black and white 12x12's from Dal's Designer Colors Series (DC 14 and DC 15): In the last two, the tub was done with Dal's standard 4 1/4" wall tiles in black and white. (Obviously the black tiles were cut down) here's another done in Dal's black and white 4 1/4's:...See MoreWhite subway tile backsplash. What color grout? Black? White?
Comments (27)I have the Subway Ceramics Avalon / Minas with a medium gray grout. And a Shaw's white sink, if anyone is considering that, by the way. (My contractor could have ordered it directly, but at his request, I went through a tile store, and by the time everyone had put their sugar onto it, it was OBSCENELY expensive.) I'm not an installation expert, but at least with the Subway Ceramics, the installers use little plastic spacers between the tiles (I think some others have their own spacers?) when they put them up, they don't do it freehand, so how much grout you get is a function of 1) the limits set by the curvature of the tile and 2) what size spacers they use. So you might be willing to go a little darker with a smaller grout line, or with a handmade tile that refuses to go close together, you might want to stay light. The traditional color is close to concrete. But most modern people don't seem to like that, so do what pleases you!...See Morewhite marble: what to do with it
Comments (7)staceyneil, Thank you for taking the time to show me examples of what could be done with a larger tile backsplash. I'm not crazy about the look of the 12 x 12s(on the diagonal is slightly better but the other just looks like flooring placed on the wall). OTOH the larger tile that looks like a 12x6 has really got me excited. Now I'm back to seriously considering using the tile in the kitchen after all. I think that size would be just large enough not to lose the effect of the tile, especially if I hire the right tile guy who'll take some time and effort placing the tile for maximum effect. Do tile guys do that, I wonder, or do they just slap it on the wall and call it a day. I need a guy who thinks of it as a craft, not just a job. One thing I noticed in the pictures of the two tile setups I liked...no electical outlets to mar the look or require cutting the tile down. It's too late for me to change that. My contractor placed about 4 outlets across the expanse of wall I'm tiling, and they're placed vertically not horizontally, so I'm not sure mine would look as clean and pretty as the inspiration pics.Is it difficult to change the direction of an outlet to minimize the disruption? I had never seen those kinds of backsplashes so thanks for sharing. I'm going to bookmark so I can print a picture for the tile guy if I decide to go with that idea. You've given me a lot to think about. sandyponder, I would love to see pictures of your bathroom. It sounds beautiful, and I'm a big fan of black and white....See MoreHelp with nosing on 3/8 tile entry steps!
Comments (1)Usually when designing something like this you have to plan it before you do something, not after so proper steps can be taken to accommodate tile installation and it's accessories. Now if you want to use a certain product and if they don't make something to go with it, it is very hard to find a match and make it look good in a specific situation. On the general note, if you found something that will work in your situation, maybe it's worth a few extra dollars to have this done right and looking nice considering this is your front steps, the front of the house and that is should be a statement of its own...That is something, everyone is going to see when they walk up to the front door. IMO about the extra money, you will spend you will forget about it probably the next day but you will be looking at your front steps for as long as you own the house... So it might be worth it. With that said posting a picture would help so people can get an idea what you have there and try to suggest something? Good luck...See MoreLynn Inkster
