To Paint, or Not to Paint the corner fireplace
This corner fireplace has the same brick as the outside of my house. I want to add a rough hewn mantel. I'm toying with the idea of painting it white or leaving it the same and adding a rough hewn mantel. I plan on replacing the wall to the left of the fireplace with french doors and windows on either side of the french doors and closing up the window (hiding) behind the media center. The corner FP is a major design dilemma. I've moved the furniture all around and keeping the FP and media center together seem to work best. I have D'Hanis (terracotta) tile floor. The rectangular room is 17' wide by 22' long. 1st two pics- Living room; 3rd pic- inspiration room; 4th pic- inspiration mantel. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Comments (18)(Frankly, I think the most off-thing next to that mantle is the TV.. the rest, -agree about it being a bit disproportional and all..would leave it anyway won't paint black the area around the firebox-I think will make the firebox look unnaturally high.. maybe to paint the whole wall a darker color. maybe consider a row of tiles. maybe live with it for now as is until figured out don't have problem with the color of bookcases..if they're a bit distressed though then I'd worry a bit more generally, I like the colors together. that's the finishes that might seem strange next to each other. but i can't see the finishes well i'd try to work with it. it's not perfect for that firebox etc yet it elevates the room anyway in a way no simple white mantle would now it seems like the other furnishings are really surprised to see it:) but in a good way. I kinda feel them talking.. sometimes things have to be right. and sometimes for them to be loved is enough. and even better same as with people (but with less grave consequences LOL)...See MoreTo paint a fireplace or to not paint
Comments (11)If the white wash was a well done as celerygirls picture, MAYBE. Stones have variety, color and texture. Painting is not indicated ever. I am afraid it will look milk toast and odd. The side "shelving" looks like it is shallow, made for a collection of some sort and a rustic one at that. Unless you have such a collection I would just remove it. The back of the chimney is designed and that look is specific to the rough ship lap that is there. I would leave it as it or it too will look out of place. Wrong choice for that application. Comments (1)Is there a reason you want to paint the brick? It is because you're chasing the all-white look? Or is the brick truly bad? I had a painted brick fireplace at my other house, was there when I moved in and frankly it looked cheap. I did have it repainted a different color which improved it -- but painted brick is not an attractive look IMO. If it's truly horrible gold or pink brick or something, then go for it, but if it's a perfectly service traditional red, brown, or grey brick I'd work with it. 3 years agoWe had a painted brick fireplace. Spent about $3000 to remove the bricks, frame the wall to bring the drywall out about 2” above the hearth for highlighting, add a locally harvested 1-3/4” slab of white oak with live edge for a hearth, tile the front and add fire place doors to improve efficiency when not in use. We’re happy with the result and so, so glad the brick is gone.

3 years agoMuriel- I actually had the TV to the right of the covered up window before I moved it where it is now. It changes the focal point of the room and because my furniture is too big, I had to separate it. Putting the fp & tv together helped. (The covered window looks at my neighbors' a/c unit.) Somehow there has to be a way to keep one focal area and keep a conversation group area of furniture. I mean most couches aren't significantly smaller than the one I have- chairs yes. I apologize for the crude drawings but they are pretty close to scale.
