Do you ever just get tired of it?
Comments (29)I have been vegetable gardening since 1980, so that's a long time. About 4 years of that time, I didn't garden. This year was going well, then we just had a groundhog show up to eat my newly planted and growing well, broccoli and the brussels sprouts we were waiting for all season. Lettuce too. So now we are working on what to do about him before next spring rolls around. It's always something. I look forward to winter and I do need that down time. Usually by the time spring comes around, I'm enthusiastic all over again. But if I had a lot of frustration and bad harvests for multiple years, then yes, I'd probably have to ask myself is it worth it? I'd definitely take a whole season off if you feel like you are dreading it. I did that for 3 years, because I had witch grass in my vegetable garden patch and I couldn't cope with it any more and just left it for two years. Then I came up with a new idea of how to deal with it, using plastic to solarize the soil for a full season and that did the trick. The next year, I was really enthusiastic and felt triumphant having solved what seemed like an unsolvable problem. Doesn't hurt to take some time off....See MoreI'm tired of seeing no green...
Comments (31)Bernd, here it is in 2012 soon after it came from Hallsons. It was my very first BONUS hosta. Have never checked it for ID before. It seems to me it looks pretty much like the Avocado in first few photos on HostaLibrary, definitely not the last two uploaded by Nightmouse....there is too much gold midleaf and the margins while green are not really wide in Nightmouse's pictures. I'd say those look more like Stained Glass, IMHO. Here is another picture of several related hosta in my garden in 2012, all identified at that time. Which one looks like your Avocado? How old is your plant? Mine is entering its 3d year here, and I believe Hallsons' plants are 3 years old when sold, so hopefully mine is showing some maturity this year. I'm pretty satisfied that mine is correctly labelled, after checking the Hosta Library. Since Stained Glass is not in that shot above, here is one of her for reference, including specimen from 2 different sources, #1Solberg, #2Naylor. Another 2012 shot. How about giving us a look at your Avocado?...See MoreDo 'perennialized' plants get tired?
Comments (14)I've been overwintering a naga jolokia for a friend for three years now. Last year it was better than ever. When I gave it back to him in the spring, it had probably 1000 pods just ready to turn red. I bet he's picked millions this summer. I really wish I'd taken a picture of it. He was thrilled. I'd say if you end up getting any root issues, then that would be the reason for your plant being less vigorous the next year. Also if you're not fertilizing. We were using 20-10-20 at 200 ppm once a week on his pepper during the winter months, then upping that to every watering as the greenhouse went into production in March and we were watering everything more often. Myself, I wouldn't put it into that small of a pot if the plant was 2-3 feet tall. I'd use like a 3 gallon or so and use just a real good draining mix like promix hp with biofungicide, which is what I usually use....See More'tuning up' my tired looking cabinets...Help!
Comments (2)You can get pretty far in cleaning with a light solution of plain dish soap and miracle cloth + blue, non-scratch pad + old toothbrush. If you need more power, you can use a very mild solution of phosphates, rinse well and dry. The color thing depends - Eandhl said one way. I'd try the light bulbs too. Sometimes, the color of the lighting changes the color of things and mixing in some warmer or cooler colored bulbs can help. The other thing that can impact the appearance of color is the other colors in the room - so you might be able to paint the walls and affect the appearance of the cabinets. The decorating forum is good for those sorts of questions....See MoreRelated Professionals
