Pope John Paul II is dead, again and again
Comments (20)I tried PJPII own root many years ago. It didn't die, but just never grew. It was 2 ft X 2 ft at best and only gave me an occasional bloom when I finally got rid of it. I have it on Dr Huey now, and it's doing great for me. Rain, humidity nor heat seem to bother its blooms. I've had Sugar Moon for two years now, and Kathy is right, itâÂÂs already at least 8 ft tall. For the most part, only blooms on top of those tall canes; whereas, PJPII blooms all over for me. It's not as tolerant of rain, either. We had massive rain this spring, and most of SMâÂÂs blooms either balled or rotted without opening. The few that did open were ruined by the rain. It greatly improved once the rain slowed down and seemed to open okay in our high humidity. PJPII didnâÂÂt miss a beat pumping out big, beautiful blooms in all the rain. Both are stunning and very fragrant, but have different bloom forms. Sugar Moon's blooms are like huge camellia flowers. I donâÂÂt have any good individual bloom shots of SM (since IâÂÂm not 8 ft tallâ¦lol), but hereâÂÂs the best I haveâ¦itâÂÂs really much prettier in person: And here's PJPII being very rain tolerant:...See MoreFailed Jelly Again...and again...and again..
Comments (15)Well then, worst case as Dave says you've got 27 jars of syrup! Though if you use some as syrup this year, you may find by New Year's that you've got jelly. Was the pectin a year since you bought it (hopefully fresh) or a year out of expiration? I've only got til Nov 12 to use my package - was going to try pepper jelly but all my peppers froze this weekend, even under plastic. I've got a few jals and serranos in the fridge, mostly green cherry peppers though. For future reference, try taking a tsp of the cider and mixing it with a tsp of rubbing alcohol in a Dixie cup (it's poisonous so throw it out and wash the spoon well), if you see big flakes of pectin after mixing it and letting it sit a few minutes, then the orchard was right and you don't even need pectin. Small-medium flakes and you'll want to add some pectin (I think powdered no sugar is best), very small or nonexistent flakes and they're wrong about the ultrapasteurization. Just wondering - how long does it usually take your pepper jelly with liquid pectin to set up?...See MoreOT: seeing again and again
Comments (5)Thank you for this. I don't post often as I have four children under seven but I always read. This is close to my heart. We are in our mid-thirties and moved about a year ago. I left many roses behind (including a 30 ft Peggy Martin trained on our chimney that will probably swallow that little house now that I'm not there to prune it) but I dug many and brought them here, to what we hope will be our home for the rest of our lives. It is a discipline to stay in one place, to look again and again. Amend the soil, dig out the plants that spoil the scene and plant something you plan to tend for decades. This is the garden I have the privilege of caring for. I might look around and wish for less humidity, changes in elevation, better soil, that the Norway maple in the back were a mature Cedar of Lebenon (haha) but ultimately no place is perfect and there is something rich in a commitment to a particular piece of earth with both it's flaws and occasional moments of beauty. There is so much in our gardens that isn't quite how we want it to be. The rabbits, the mildew, the weak rootstock. The picture is never quite finished but I am happy to know that I can look and look again instead of paying admission and moving on....See MoreHow can I disinfect this to use again and again?
Comments (18)I think I'd just wash them with soapy water and a bottle brush and then rinse with a solution of 1 teaspoon of bleach to a gallon of water once a week or so. Don't forget the lids. We used to use that bleach solution on glasses when we owned the bar/restaurant, although we used it after each use, for obvious reasons. I'd probably sanitize with bleach daily if I had a cold or the bottles are used by multiple people. I do have insulated stainless bottles, a couple of them, and a Thermos travel mug for coffee, also stainless. My water bottles will keep ice frozen all day, even when I'm working in the garden and my bottle is sitting in full sun. I could go just get a drink out of the garden hose, and I have done that without apparent harm, but it's a long walk to the faucet when I can have those bottles sitting right at the end of my row, although I often drink both of them and still have to get water from the hose. I never drink that kind of sports drink, so don't have empty bottles. I do drink too much Diet Coke, but Michigan has a 10 cent deposit on bottles, so those go back to the store for my deposit back. Ice Mountain has a facility less than 10 miles from my house. I tell my kids how foolish we are, allowing a foreign company to pump our water out of the ground, package it in non-biodegradable plastic bottles that will end up in our landfills, and then sell our own water back to us, when the water from our taps comes from the same aquafer. (sigh) I don't buy bottled water unless I'm travelling and have not filled my water bottles, having either forgotten or having only had access to water that was unpalatable to me.
