A holly, Ilex verticillata

Thanks, was not aware of a deciduous holly. Glad to have it on my plot - now to find the male plant.

Does I. verticillata grow a trunk that large?

No, I. verticillata does not but I. decidua does.

Revisited the tree today and took some measurements, height is 19 ', DBH was 2.65 " Did a little looking around and did not see another. Both are possible in my region. After doing some internet comparisons its most likely possum haw. Cleaned the vines off it and trimmed some competing branches to allow a little more sun. I will keep an eye on it. Thanks for the input.

dandy_line, these pics were taken with a 10-12 yr old 16mb Cannon powershot camera. This poor camera gets left in the truck or in my pack when Im in the field. Its missing parts from being dropped many times, survives high temps being left in the truck, and spent a few seconds under water.

It probably enjoyed being under water after those high temperatures
