Thanks for the responce. The only thing wrong is it is old. The door is painted in several layers, and has planes of elongated glass, which is not very appleaing. Also the storm door (42 inches) is on its last leg. The door is not really that thick. My wife likes the look of a textured fiberglass door. What would be the dollar factor to get this door refinshed by a pro? Also any ideas on going with steel door @ 42" or a prehung fiberglass@ 36 " THANKS!!!!

dino, pretty door. It will dress up your hallway very nicely and will fit with your traditional/transitional decor just fine. I think it will add a little sparkle to your somewhat plain facade. It isn't like some doors that are so ornate & Victorian that they look out of place on a colonial-esque home. Yours is a nice choice. Hope you enjoy.

One mistake that you made was getting the builders carpenter involved. Should have gone back to the original maker of the door, first. Our newly installed manufactured door is unstained for the next few weeks. It is already swelling with cold temperatures, rain and snow. Needs to be stained ASAP. However, I am worried that if we stain it now, it would stay swelled and not shrink back down. Ours came with the wrong color of threshold and hardware (hinges and handle.) Black instead of ORB. Not sure who's fault that is, but it is what it is. I guess it was a blessing. (See below) We also had two sets of French doors, as well as a single installed. While the handles are black, the hinges on the doubles are bronze (thankfully, these are outswing doors.) On the single (which is an inswing), the hardware is all black. The doors are in the same room. LOL We would love to see your new door...cracks and all!

Nice house. Please don't paint the brick. Anything painted will, inevitably, need to be repainted and begin to look awful as it gets to that point whereas the whole point of brick is its low maintenance. Removing the shutters permanently is a good idea. When you replace the windows, you could have an additional trim board added all around the new windows in lieu of replacing the shutters. Vertical board siding to replace the current siding is also a good idea. If you're going with cedar, keep the natural wood cedar finish look rather than painting it. If you use something like Hardie Board siding and paint it, paint your front door a bolder version of the same color. Before growing season, you might consider cutting back the shrubs by the house, digging up the root ball and transplanting them to along the edge of your lot to make way for a front yard patio beneath the shade of the tree in your front yard.. You might outline sidewalk -- not necessarily with pavers.
