Flooring Design Dilemma entry

Flooring help needed

We are remodeling a house. There is carpet in the family room and living room that we want to replace with either hardwood or tile. We have to work with the 12 x 12 tile that is in the foyer. Can you offer suggestions as to what colors of wood flooring or tile would go with the foyer tile as well as the brick in the fire place? Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you!

You can pretty much do anything besides espresso, white wash, and grey wash. Nobody ever lost money putting in a natural toned oak.

Thank you! Do you think it would be too dark to go the color of the ceiling beams (you can see them in the foyer photo)?

THis is just a summer cottage, no insulation, heat, etc. it was built by a farmer for my parents 50 + years ago. The pine floors aren’t even tongue & groove, just very irregular boards, and I have no interest whatsoever in the time or expense of refinishing them. In general it isn't a good idea to mix a real product with a faux version of it. I did use wood-look tile in my guest house and we have real wood on the staircase, BUT I had the hardwood floor guy stain and finish the wood stair treads to match the tile. He got a very very close match and most don't notice the transition from tile to wood to tile. Why don't you like hardwood in the kitchen? This is my third house with all hardwood (except for bathrooms) and we've never had any issues. I would steer away from huge contrast and faux next to real.

Oh wow, I didn't see that on mobile, but I can see it on desktop! Houzz app is horrible. Yes, I think it will be fine. Thinking more holistically though, it might make more sense to get something that matches beams exactly so it looks like the floor and beams were put in on the same day.

Why do you have to work with the foyer tiles? It doesn’t look valuable, beautiful , or unique. It looks like it’s thirty years old and done it’s time... most people want one flooring throughout the main spaces in the home, this is a great time to put oak everywhere.
