Need some suggestions on linearis propogation

I just purchased some linearis cuttings on Etsy. They should arrive this week. Several months ago someone was kind enough to include some cuttings in another order I placed, but they all died on me. I tried propagating them in sphagnum moss at the time. Can anyone give me some ideas as to the best method to propagate linearis, one which might lead to the greatest success? Also, assuming I'm successful in growing roots on them - what soil do they prefer? Same as other hoyas?

I'm having good success with the leca method. This single strand developed roots within 2-3 weeks in this. Link to my discussion:

I also planted some individual node cuttings in bundles in small pots and have those in a clear container with air-tight lid to retain some humidity. I tugged on a few and can confirm they developed roots but have not seen any sign of new growth yet.

Popmamma, I sacrificed a clear storage container. I took the lid ad cut a large rectangle out of it, then taped saran wrap over the opening. I'm going to use that as my propagation container. The sides are translucent and the top, while originally being white, is now clear because it has the saran wrap covering it. I will put the pots with cutting in it once I receive them along with some cups of water to increase the humidity. I suspect this will work just fine.

Wow! This thread has a long life. I don't know if anyone is still interested but I thought I would post anyway. I used to have lots of luck rooting coleus in water but now there are so many chemicals in it that if the water doesn't sit for a day the plants start turning black right away. Most of you refer to the length of the cutting and so I have to tell you it is the number of leaf nodes that is important. You can have a very long cutting and if there are no nodes in the water or soil there will be no roots. The rooting hormones usually have a fungicide in them. The auxons (growth chemicals) are stimulated by the rooting hormone so you increase your chances of sucess. When I give propagation classes I recommend the use of a microwave to sterlize the soil. Vermiculite and perlite are both excellent as starting medium because they don't get waterlogged as easily as peat based starting soil.Twenty-five years ago coleus was considered a shade plant. The new hybrids with the brighter colors will take a lot more sun. Since they are hybrids, collecting seed is not usually sucessful in getting a plant with the same characteristics as the parent plant. That's why when you buy the seed you get a mix from a particular strain. I hope this has been helpful :) -Sandy

Tammy...everyone seems to treat their H. linearis differently, depending on where they live. I find that the MOST active time of growth is during my winter, when the temperatures in the house are at 58 degrees. I find that H. linearis does zero growing during the hot summer months, but once we reach December, the plants send up many new vines, which helps to fill in the plants. I have two H. linearis..and both behave the same way. I would suggest that you re-pot your linearis as soon as you like...waiting until spring/summer is not a great idea for a "winter" grower. I see that you live near the tropics, so this might not work for you. Why do you want to re-pot this plant? Both of mine are EA hoyas, and are still in their original mix/hanging basket...they do very well. I try my best to keep mine moist, watering heavily before they dry out, until the water runs from the basket tray...I also will soak them occasionally. Mine look "stressed" during the hot months, but perk up once autumn arrives...and then sends out lots of new vines. Mine are hung above the windows and reach the floor and run along the floor a few feet. I really would like to know why you wish to re-pot? Best wishes, Patrick

Got some new plants and need some advice (part 2)

The plant is in my shed that we turned into an extra bedroom. It will stay there for now but can't be there in winter. I want to propagate the long vines that have no leaves in the middle. I have had poor luck propagating Marble Queen, they seem more delicate that regular Goldens. What I did with the other long golden was cut a few vines but some of the long ones I put in seed starting mix still attached to the mother plant. I also put one vine looped down into a jar of water (water from my fish tank which the plants love). I think I will do that with the MQ as well. That way I can hopefully get roots on a vine before I cut it. I know that really long vines can be harder to get roots. I think this one really needed some good sunlight. I will leave her there for now and I should have my potting medium within a week or so. I will transplant her and then see about trying to propagate some of the vines while still attached. Maybe I should fertilize her now so she has more strength for when I repot? I know the better sunlight will help too.

Correct ... try again ... Baby violets don't need a lot of water. Just water them enough to keep the potting mix slightly damp, like a wrung-out rag. Make sure that your potting mix has the requisite Pearlite mixed in (as Irina stated), and check to see if the AV potting mix you are using isn't ALREADY FERTILIZED. If your mix is ALREADY FERTILIZED, ... don't add any fertilizer for at least six months. If I use a pre-fertilized mix, as I do usually with no problems, I may wait until I get good growth and a first bloom before I start to add fertilizer. Finally, check with your water provider to see if they use Chloramine in their water processing. If they do, then you will have to use another source for water (i.e. grocery Spring water, rain-water, etc.), because Chloramine will kill your African Violets. I was never really able to successfully propagate new Violets, until I discovered that my water company used Chloramine, ... and then switched to using grocery Spring water to water my African Violets.

Popmama - here's a picture of the tote box propagator. I will be placing a small heating mat under it later today once it arrives. As you can see, it's a simple set up. Cut a rectangle in the top (follow the mold lines and it's simple), place saran wrap over it and tape into place. Seem to work well.
