We are not installing grab bars, but the rail can be a grab bar, and that is what my question is about. Unfortunately, where the plumbing is, and where the cross piece would go, is where the pipe comes up so there is not enough depth for even a 2x4. I am thinking of making a metal piece,,, We are using plain sheetrock because our tile installer will be using the Schluter system and told us that we don't need to use cement board. He said that the Schluter system works so well that he will not do a bathroom unless that is part of the plan. The membrane will go all the way up the walls as far as the tile does.

No need to add anything on top of a corectley installed torch down modified roof with all needed flashing those things are a done deal for 20/30 years or so. We lay 2x acq stringers 16'' on center in the direction of the flow with a strip of modified under them,screw decking to the stringers,not past them into the roof. Dap out the rail posts 1 1/2 x however wide the rim joists is,bolt the posts to the rim joists.The Dap out lets the post sit on top of the decking. Its a good idea to figure out what kind of surface you want to walk on a little bit ahead of time, for sure dont plan on walking on the roof. Not really sure about the siding thing, flashing needs to be behind it and over the top of the roof or melted to the flashing by another strip of modified. J.

In my old kitchen (pre-reno) I had glass doors which my son shattered with a ball. I took to doors off that wall and had it open. Loved it. When it came time to do a reno a few months ago, I installed two open shelves along the same wall. Thick wood that I had cut and reused from an old butcher block counter top. I wouldn't change a thing. They are actually the only upper cabinets that we have in the kitchen and I keep wine glasses and a few other things on the top shelf and the bottom one has coffee canisters, salt and pepper mills, a few regular used spices and olive oil. keeping it organized and clean is a breeze.

I recently moved into a condo with a great outdoor roof space. I'd like to beautify the space a bit in two ways. 1- The floor is an ugly yellow sheet vinyl or lino in a tile pattern. I'd like to pressure wash it and then stain or paint it. I'd like to preserve some of the texture and pattern, so I'm leaning toward a stain but I'm just not sure that will adhere. Any advice? I'm afraid paint will peel too easily. (I have thought about installing a floating deck over this floor but that is too expensive for me right now.) 2- The railings are really an extension of the fire escape. They are an ugly galvanized iron. I'd love to either paint it or hide it. I've thought of using planters to cover it, but open to other ideas. I'd also like to block the railings to improve wind resistance. Check out the pics. Would love ideas. Thank you.
