What to do at bottom of deck stairs

Emily R.

We just replaced our rotting-out wood deck with TimberTech (a 2+-month-long very un-fun saga but never mind) (also: pretend you don't see the ridiculous gap in the balusters) (see: un-fun). The original steps were wider at the bottom and extended out over most of that dirt patch in the picture. Now I'm looking for ideas on what to do down there. Plant grass or some hardy ground cover? Pavers? Flagstones? The little stepping stones lead to an outdoor shower at the corner of the house. We're in Northern CA, Zone 9B, near the beach. Plants grow like *crazy* here, not that you can tell from this pic -- but we also have a very active gopher who loves nothing better than to destroy the lawn. :P (I am not willing to poison him.)

Thanks for all ideas!
