help please: ideas for family gathering
Comments (7)Meat loaf is a good idea...maybe individual ones. My son bakes them like mounds on cookie sheets so they take less time to bake and also because not all of us like ketchup on them.... and they look very festive. I'd serve mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans or corn, rolls and butter....and of course your cookies. Simple cheeses and crackers with grapes and olives are easy appetizers. Some years really are awful, aren't they? May you have a happy, healthy, prosperous 2010. Sherry...See MoreNeed your advice. Friend won't stop helping with the dishes.
Comments (24)I'm one who likes to be a guest when I am a guest, and likes to be the hostess and treat my guests as guests when I'm hostess. In other words, I feel no compulsion to help clean up at others' homes, and I do not allow my guests to help clean up at my house. I tell people point blank, I wish to do my own dishes and that they are guests and should have a seat and let me worry about the dishes. I will usually do a quick rinse/organization of dishes but not a real clean up or loading of the DW. Now, as to your friend, here's how I'd handle it, since she's already in this habit. Next time she gets up with her plate, I'd immediately get up and meet her in the kitchen. As soon as she put her plate down, I'd give her a hug, and then instead of fully releasing the hug, I'd hold her at the shoulders or arms so that we were eye to eye. Then I'd say something like, "Debbie, You are such a sweetheart to always help me with the dishes. I appreciate your thoughtfulness! But to be honest, it makes me very uncomfortable for you to be doing that here. You're the guest, and I actually prefer to do my own clean up in my kitchen, just because I like to do things my own way. So please, sit down, and enjoy the gathering, and don't give clean up another thought." This accomplishes a couple of things. First of all, it doesn't make her feel bad because you start out by saying how nice she is. Holding her close as you speak sends the message that this is a serious talk, not just a polite aside. It's also done in the kitchen, away from the other guests. If she still insists, I'd take her by the hand and lead her back to her seat. In other words, be gentle, complimentary, sweet, etc, but FIRM....See MoreIKEA kitchen vs One-stop shop cost difference?
Comments (31)Hi Nora New, the kitchen planner that came out was Jenny I think and the contractor I ended up using was Michael Early construction. He is on houzz, just search under pros, you can see his previous projects. I'm not sure he's still a designated Ikea installer still, but I'm sure he can tell you. What I heard was that Ikea grossly underestimated the demand and that they were having major out of stock issues and therefore projects being delayed. Not sure what the situation is now. I also had good experience at the kitchen department in San Diego, they were really helpful. BUT this was my experience, I don't know anyone else personally who's gone through Ikea so I can only tell you my own experience. I have not used Ikea for bathrooms, my kitchen was the last project that I was dreading to start, I had already done bathrooms with other contractors. ikea installer vs. outside contractors, I think it's your personal choice. There are a few contractors that don't like to work on Ikea cabinets so I think you just have to do your research. I'm happy with the result. Good luck to you and let me know if you have any more questions. also there's another thread started by Marcia Dorherty (I think) that has a lot of detail about Ikea kitchens, check that out, it might be helpful....See More"The Gathering of Succulents 2" - Let's see some of your repots
Comments (13)I haven't done anything fancy. Just replacing old mix with better grittier mix. These have all been repotted in the past 2 months to better mix:). Made this for my cousin last Friday:). Just repotted my Rat Tail cactus this past weekend. The String of Nanners was taking over, and not letting the Rat Tail do its thing. Haven't repotted the Strings yet:). They were in this hanging basket for two years. I had to cut them out of the Coco liner. All by itself in a new Coco liner:). He looks happier. Did this a couple weeks ago. I bought these Portulaca molokiniensis at the end of April. One of my all time favs. Always dies during the winter, but this year these two will go inside:). The first pic is when I first bought them. By one get one deal. They were on deaths door. These plants do not do well in periods of drought. They are from Hawaii. So they can't help it;). Sorry the first pic is bad. It was taken in bad kitchen lighting at night. April 30 Today repotted in a better mix. Gets more water. Probably not as much as they would like, but they are looking better:)....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
