Carpet vs. hardwood and rugs

Janet

There is a strongly opinionated majority that seem to think carpeting is disgustingly dirty and would never have anything but hardwood flooring in living areas. And then cover it with area rugs. Which get as dirty as any carpeting would and are harder to clean. Trickier to vacuum, can’t wash them in place, etc. Not to mention the scooting of dust that gathers in clumps on hardwood. And of course, more expensive to have to pay for hardwood AND area rugs to cover them. And then there is the sound muffling and softness under foot with carpeting and the tripping hazards with rugs, aging in place. So I’m thinking about replacing my remaining carpet with hardwood, and these are the conflicting arguments going on in my head. I don’t need to hear from the “I’d never have carpeting” group, but what has been the practical experience from those who have lived with carpeting and made the switch to hardwood - and area rugs?
