Flooring Design Dilemma Home Decorating

Carpet and hallway dilemma

I am planning on replacing my carpet. Don't judge me on the colors, I did not pick them. They were here when we moved in.
I have two questions:
#1 There is this strange pony wall at the top of the stairs. It covers the top three stairs. Is this something that I can or should remove? It creates a strange job in my hallway.
#2 The playroom at the top of the stairs currently has half carpet and half wood floor. Will I have to remove the wood floor to fully carpet the room or should I be able to just go over it?

You either have the pony wall or a railing with spindles. Someone decided this was the less expensive solution.

Agreed -- you can't have the top three steps just hanging out there or you could trip down them.

No idea on the partial wood floor -- it will depend on whether the elevations currently match. You may well need to remove the wood to get a level carpeted floor.

You'll probably have a hard time with the hinges (and what's wrong with them anyway? They are bits of decorative hardware!). I suspect those cabinet doors have a semi-inset thing going on which is why they look thinner than they are. When they are in good shape like yours appear to be, it's really a more solid and custom feel than modern full overlay, although the style is simpler. (Some of these in more formal areas had applied molding on the door faces, usually thin stuff. Very dainty, and something you could add if you wanted to gussy up the existing doors.) I'd paint the cabinets the trim color (with a good sheen) and continue the wall color on the walls.

Well, if you decide to stay with the solid tread/risers (IMHO... the best, but I'm biased), and you remove the side boards... the best application would be to replace the treads, because if you keep them, the exposed ends would need to have, what we call "returns", and it's probably not feasible to add them to the existing treads.

Have you considered entirely removing the door from the hallway entrance? That gives you more flexibility with sizes. I really prefer "C" but much will depend on what you can find that is ready to go, especially if you're looking at antique rugs. I would not worry if the area in front of the bedroom door were just flooring. Here's a company provided by "This Old House" for a squeak stopping kit. Check it out and see if your husband could work with it. Maybe someone you know could send it to you if they don't ship overseas.

I wouldn't touch the pine, but you've gotten some good suggestions for introducing some color. A rug, new light fixture. I love your counter height chairs, but that could be a good place to introduce color in painted not-more-wood chairs. I can't really see the seating other than a dark leather piece and the edge of what may be a brown leather sofa. And, I can't tell how new to know if you might be willing to replace with something of color there?

This is the bottom of the stairs. I suppose it makes the most sense to try to stay in the same style.

We would like to make our family room more welcoming and comfy. Ideally this would be a place with comfy seating where we can watch movies. We would also like to use the corner outside the closet as a play area and keep the corner desk somehow.

The room is 18 ft on the wall with the window and 24 ft long. Any ideas on how to place the furniture so it's the appropriate distance from a 55-in TV. New furniture will be purchased. I also like the idea of an electric fireplace since this room is over the garage and stays cool.

If it is solid hardwood, it should measure between 5/8 to 3/4" think. If you put plywood down the same thickness in the rest of the area, you shouldn't have to rip out the hardwood. If it is laminate (which I don't think it is, judging from the photos), you can just take it up. I wonder why they did it that way?
