That is too funny. When I read this, I wondered at first... did I post this? I have a very similar situation. I have a small room that had DD's harp, a small secretary and a daybed. The daybed is used pretty often for naps/sleeping, so i had it made up like a bed. I decided to make it more sofa like, since it adjoins a PR that guests sometimes use.

I googled images on how to make up a daybed and found a ton of good ideas.I think the key thing you will want is larger pillows all the way across the back, and a bedskirt that has 4 sides (BBnB has them). Wish I still had the link but I'm sure you can find similar.

I went to Homegoods and chose pillows based entirely on size and number availability and ended up with this. It is apropos of nothing else in my house, so IDK....plus I think I need a 4th pillow in row one. Haven't decided (note all the tags are still on).

ETA again ... if the desk were in front of the window, could you see out? It looks like maybe not?

They all look so soft and cozy, yet still “crisp”, if that makes sense? Kind of a nice mix of tailored and comfortable. So many options for colors to add in with pillows, a throw, rug, etc.

I have a daybed in my guest bedroom, plus a small desk which I occasionally use as a desk . . . anyway, years ago I special ordered covered bolsters for the daybed because I actually want to use it more like a couch. Another option which my mother used (she also had a daybed) are king sized pillows on the back. Now that I have inherited my Mom's linens, I use both the bolsters plus the king sized pillows and then other pillows in front. I brought in a dustruffle. To me, it finishes the looks so I like it even if it is superfluous. YMMV as to the look you're going for, I think yours looks nice as is, just not practical for sitting on as a couch. But I don't know if you want to do that . . . Bolsters or king pillows would take up more space in the back, making it looks narrower and less like a bed, that's the main benefit.

because the daybed I got is reading kind of “college futon” I think I will get a set with a tailored bedskirt (as opposed to ruffled). I was hoping it would read more “charming old metal bed.”

A king dust ruffle is the same width as daybed, so you can shorten (or tuck under) the long sides to have it fit properly If you aren’t floating the daybed in the room.

Bedskirts and dust ruffles look like bedding to me. The orange room above is perfect for zoom calls, especially the quilt.

If it was my room I'd get nicer pillow covers, keep the yellow walls, and hang white curtains. I have white lace curtains on a yellow wall very similar to your yellow and I love the cheerfulness of the room.

Did you know I love small rooms? There's something cozy about them.

We have a daybed very similar to Robo's (it was originally our youngest son's first "big boy" bed) in our office/guest room.

I bought a king size quilt set from Overstock and let it hang down in front instead of a skirt. I store some seasonal items under the daybed, so it keeps them hidden. I over stuffed the king sized pillow shams, so they act as bolsters.

I also like the wedge shaped bolsters that make a day bed more couch-like. I had my 'bunk' made years ago; it's narrower, made of wood, has a removable zippered upholstery cover on a foam "mattress", and it's a comfy place to sit or nap or even sleep. has a tailored look not at all like a bed.

If it’s not used for sleeping often, I would go with a fitted cover. With large pillows for the back. Like this from World Market.

I wonder if you did one or two large rectangular cushions across the back to mimic sofa cushions. It might give it more of a structured look and be a background for the loose pillows.

Maddie, I own two of those daybeds (in Maine),with those covers.. I forgot, yes, a cover makes it look less bedlike!

I also have that WM daybed! it’s at our beach cottage and I have a cover that I found on a futon website...they carried futon covers as well as mattress covers for daybeds.

This is the daybed in my home office. I have two king pillows in the back.

PS meant to add that I think adding a skirt will make it look more bedroom-ish.

LOL and I have 2 of the one in your photo, too, Sue. In fact i have 3 daybeds here that I've owned for years (one in storage, one in DD2's room, one in the music room) and 4 in Maine. I am the daybed queen! I better pay closer attention. Love your color scheme there Sue.

My mom also used to have a coverlet that covered the whole thing, top to floor. Then bolster cushions in the same fabric. It was MCM style, because it was MC! Imagine this only with a coverlet over the mattress that went down to the floor. It was all orange. It used to have legs like the one pictured but they were getting iffy with us kids playing on the couch so Dad build a solid wood box frame. Mom initially had it in her bayview apt. in San Francisco when she was a hip single gal. It ended up in my little brother's room as a spare bed for guests . . . a rather ignoble end but we liked it .

I’ve never used a daybed, but I really like all these looks! Robo, I think your “before” is still pretty nice, but so many good ideas here.

Just to update you all, I’m convinced I want a fitted, preferably welted/corded/piped cover for the daybed. Just searching all over for one in budget available in Canada without 3mos lead time (because I’m impatient). Difficult to find one thick enough for my 10” mattress. World market ones are perfect but don’t ship to Canada.

Have you tried the desk and file where you show the daybed and the daybed on either the wall where the desk is or the wall with the entry door? If the bed was on the door wall, then the bookcase could be where the desk is, but even where it is, the desk on that opposite wall would allow you to position your camera toward the bookcase and doors or bookcase and window. You bypass the issue of whether the daybed looks more bed or more sofa and have something more office like in the background. Just a thought.

I have a twin bed that is a modified sleigh bed, was my bed when I was young and is a family heirloom that survived the Great Chicago FIre. I really wanted, so it's not going anywhere, but it is taking up room I wish I had against the wall daybed style in my sewing room. This discussion is adding to my thinking about where else and how else I might use it until one of the boys have a kiddo to use it.

While googling "daybed bolster pillows" I found this shot. Exactly the look my Mom morphed her old daybed into, except "burnt orange" as they called it. Ah memories! I'm not recommending this look, it's so "buttoned up" but I just posted the photo for fun.

My grandmother had something similar in dark blue, but I don't think hers was quilted like that. Hers was actually 2 twin beds in a corner at 90 degrees to one another with a large square table over the juncture. She had a terrarium on top of the table. It was all so trendy at the time and we thought it was pretty cool.

I like the fitted look with the piping better too if you want it to look less like a bed. When I was googling around looking to find less expensive fitted covers for you, I came across this DIY project which looks pretty easy if you have access to a sewing machine for 10 minutes and a little bit of time to finish the rest by hand. I think the hand stitching works here because the fabric is busy. If you’re using a solid fabric, I think you need to machine stitch the pockets to run the cord through. You should be able to find remnants of some really nice fabrics out there for a good price. I would probably use a fabric suitable for upholstery because it might hold its shape better.

This is my childhood trundle bed. I have had different variations of covers over the years. Currently using a twin size coverlet. I made (sewed) the bed skirt because I only needed one side due to the side rails. The bolster pillows cam,e with the bed.

Localeater, good idea to seek out someone custom instead of specifically looking for daybed covers. Last night I found someone on Etsy who had everything I needed and I spent an hour picking out fabric to then realize she doesn’t ship to Canada. I have sent an enquiry to the person you posted.

You might ask about shipping to Canada. I wanted a pattern from a shop that clearly said they didn't ship outside the UK. Wrote them and asked if they might make a pdf version available - and they did. Apparently sold a bunch too. Now, I realize a daybed cover doesn't work as a pdf, but when I mentioned that I loved some of their fabrics, they wrote back and told me that if I wanted to purchase something to just write and they would have to figure out shipping. Some sellers are willing to do that when time and circumstance allow but don't want to gum up their business with having too many that can get complicated with customs forms and then a pandemic and delays on top of that. Asking costs nothing and if you don't ask, you don't get for sure.
