Remodeling Design Dilemma Fireplaces

Should I paint this brick chimney?

I am trying to create a modern beach house. I had hoped to paint this chimney white (after removing drywall that had surrounded). The brick is old, and not sure if it will look nice painted. The area around is kitchen, and planned on white cabinets (lower only) and two hutches/pantry of rift sawn oak. I am worried, I will have too much going on in this space if I keep this brick vintage red.

Is that an actual working wood burning FP? Why did you plan on removing the drywall? I think now if you want the brick it will need to stripped down to the brick everywhere so I need to have more info and I guess a look at the kitchen layout too. I have a huge stone FP it backs into my kitchen I love it with all the modern stuff we own it adds a old Europen feel to the kitchen. More info is what we need , like waht are the floors going to be

It's true that many chimneys are painted. Talk to an experienced mason, though, and he'll probably tell you it's not a wise practice for brick chimneys, especially in climates that experience freeze thaw cycles. The paint as it weathers traps water. As it freezes, thaws and refreezes you get spalling - flaking off the outer layer - of the bricks. Brick and mortar left exposed also form their own protective coating. Covered with paint, they can't do this.

purrus - very very very nice! I also like all the neutral tones in the room. well done. scoutfinch - I first primed with BM All Purpose Fresh Start primer and then 2 coats of BM Aura 'Black' in eggshell finish. I don't use my F/P so heat-resistant issues didn't cross my mind, but something for you to check on if you do. Black heat-resistant paint should be easy to get, because it is available for gas grills. Personally, I don't think it would be necessary, but who knows. jamies - it is not hard at all to add a little faux texture to your bricks yourself. I think you would get a big improvement. you can go lighter or darker or even stay close to the existing color. You can just do a touch or go heavy. Its so flexible and so easy. Just be very random (in a controlled sort of way). Maintain the grout lines. I think in my link above, I described how I did mine.

Is there a reason you want to paint the brick? It is because you're chasing the all-white look? Or is the brick truly bad? I had a painted brick fireplace at my other house, was there when I moved in and frankly it looked cheap. I did have it repainted a different color which improved it -- but painted brick is not an attractive look IMO. If it's truly horrible gold or pink brick or something, then go for it, but if it's a perfectly service traditional red, brown, or grey brick I'd work with it. Posting a pic would help responses.

IMO painting brick is the fastest way to devalue your home so if that is the plan go for it. Gutters are not decor items and should be as invisible as possible. Plus we need pictures posted here in comments DO NOT start another post.
