New Ranch! BUT ugly front porch awning.....exterior paint and col
Comments (34)Congrats on your new home! It will be charming. I think the awning spoils the lines of the house, and doesn't let you see the interesting angles of the brickwork. I would take it down. However, if you think it is really of benefit and you want to keep it, I would paint it the same color as the siding OR the same color as the roof. I would also paint the brown wood the siding color - it makes the front windows feel like they are sitting in a hole, and doesn't really do anything special for the house. I would also love to see you take out those bushes in front of the porch. They really date the house, and exposing that brick and stone would give the front porch more substance. A wider, curved bed in front of that with low plantings would be nice, and then perhaps a larger evergreen on the left corner of the porch. A second curved out bed in front of the left half of the house, perhaps a birdbath in the middle of the bed, and then a small tree of some kind on the left outside corner of the house, but a bit away and in the final curved planting area out even a bit more into the yard there. The ironwork is also a dated look, but I don't know if you want to replace that right now. Personally, I might take out the pieces in between the vertical posts, and open up the front porch even more. I think I would leave it white, like the rest of the trim on the house. Finally, I would think about a strong accent color for the front door. A rich navy would be very pretty, and a good transition between the cool grey tones in the roof and the warmer yellows and oranges of the brick and siding....See MoreNeed help with modern landscaping
Comments (30)I did not expect an update so soon. You have been busy. Now that I can see the side yard better it looks as if some lawn died due to shade. Could that be right? Anyway, i am move to share an idea I was too timid to bring up before. I think that right side would be a great area for a large bed of decomposed granite. I am actually not qualified to shape a bed design so don't take this too seriously. You might be able to plant some sun plants closer to the sidewalk. In order to be done right you must excavate about four or five inches of soil I think. It would provide a non muddy path to the side door when it rains. Use as many or as few plants as you like. Mulch would work too and you only have to excavate 3 inches I think. With you being in Texas I like the idea of the DG. Fall is planting time where I live. I've been doing a lot of nursery browsing. Did you know there are some Agaves that don't get huge? I have never wanted one because I don't have place for a big specimen but I am now reconsidering. I know I made that curve in the wrong direction. Just consider the idea....See MoreWhat to do with front porch of Spanish Colonial Revival bungalow?
Comments (10)Its a good idea getting rid of the two beams. Let me show you where our front door is as I can tell its hard to see from the photos! My original vision was something like this below but the contractor didnt really listen to our ideas he just replaced everything (termites/dryrot) and kept it the way it was (a whole other story) assuming thats what we wanted, so I'm not really liking it since a different vision was the whole reason we had it torn down. We did remove the step in front of the door and brought the whole porch up with more cement, then made it that much taller on the roof side to compensate....See MoreDual Front Porch Entry Wanted for 80’s Ranch
Comments (18)With the first photo, I like the size of this porch. With the second photo, I like the materials and style but would prefer for the sides to be closed off for safety purposes. With the last photo, I like style. But I suppose the original point was I wanted an access point from the driveway for inclement weather. As well as a new pathway to the front door. Plus, that’s what he originally wanted to do, make a porch. Now his idea has changed and naturally I have to go alongside that thinking. You know, cause we have to work as a team....See Morekfx216
