Sticky situation on furniture buying -How does the designer feel?
Comments (11)Hello, I haven't been on this website in a while since I finished building my home, but when I saw this post, I had to respond. I experienced the very same problem about 4 years ago. I live in the Phila. area and hired a local designer. She picked out great furniture pieces, fabrics for the upholstery and window coverings, and drew up great plans for my great room (family room, kitchen and breakfast area - furniture and window coverings). We then went shopping at the Marketplace Design Center and picked out all of the furniture, which was so much fun. Unfortunately, the total cost of everything I ordered was almost $68,000 plus delivery which was almost $1000 for everything. I loved everything we picked out and did not want to compromise on anything, but there was no way I was going to pay that much. I then did a little research and went to the 2 premier furniture stores in the area (Hendrixsons and Sheffields), both of which sold the very same pieces that I saw at the Marketplace Design Center; however, because they are very well known furniture stores that moved lots of furniture, they were able to get better pricing from the manufacturers I was interested in (Bausman, Guy Chaddock, Hancock & Moore, EJ Victor, Kravet, Henkel Harris, etc.). In addition, they did not charge for delivery. I ended up doing what you're proposing. I was frank with her and told her that by ordering the furniture from the furniture stores, I was saving over $20,000. She was shocked, but completely understood and frankly, was shocked at the pricing differential. I did purchase the window coverings from her, so as to cover her services (and this made sense because she measured everything already), but I ended up buying everything else from the 2 furniture stores. Finally, I had difficulties with a table I ordered from Guy Chaddock and I believe the furniture store was extremely helpful in getting my problem resolved. Most importantly, I was able to preserve my relationship with my designer and have used her again. Good luck!...See MoreFloor Plan Design Dilemma for New Build (Need Architect Advice)
Comments (158)In Ontario any homeowner can submit their own drawings, however, they will be reviewed by the planning department to ensure the drawings meet code. However, a professional I,e, draftsman, designer, architectural technologist etc must complete and pass exams and thus obtain a (Building code identification no) BCIN. An architect does not require a BCIN, however, they must be licensed in the province in order to have construction drawings approved. Comments (41)well, you could always remove the chair rail. but yes, if you paint the walls, you'll have to pick the same color to carry out through those adjoining halls I think Pale Oak, , Smoke Embers, Nimbus, or Light pewter would all be lovely in your space. I'd also hang a nice piece of art here to tie in the pale aqua chairs, maybe to some pillows on the sofa w/those colors. the fireplace/mantle is way too traditional looking. I'd remove everything. if you want more Boho, try some zellige tile on the surround I love this selection^ or a cement tile with natural wood mantle or, do more of a modern surround w/a marble tile at the very least, do a diff surround w/out the fluting...See Moreoutdoor design dilemma! Comments (3)If you figure out the bug issue, the side yard looks big enough for a sofa seating area and maybe round table for dining. You could put down some stones and maybe cement pavers. Teak is a good wood for outdoor furniture or you could try metal. If the budget it tighter, shipping palettes or the plasticized rattan outdoor sofas are easy to care for. And yes get winter tarps if concerned about Northern winters and cold. Good luck! Enjoy the outdoors! We eat almost every meal outdoors when the weather permits. Good luck!...See Moreapple_pie_order
