Comments (25)Nosoccermom, yes, for the DR table I expect the bark will come off with use. The table maker sprayed it with the same water based finishing as the table top, but the bark is still vulnerable. DH and I may finish the bark in a much stronger product to secure it more. And we should use a table cloth when eating. But regardless, on a table that will be used frequently I'm sure we'll lose some bark. That's okay I guess, the table will still work. ;) Robo, love that chair from Pier1. I never think of Pier1. I had thought I would go with a cheap knock off of the Eames shell, only $65 I think from EQ3 or Structube: But I think I prefer a tall windsor like the marcel. EQ3 sells the Lyla for $179 but I've seen these in person and they seem too small. I think the Marcel is taller. He are the Lylas: I've been keeping an eye on Kijiji for antique Windsors too. I'm a bit wary though, as the antique dining chars I've purchased in the past were a bit fragile for daily use. Just found these online for $179 each, locally made it looks like, but not as elegant as the Marcel. I will definitely head to Pier1 and check them out....See MoreWalnut Dining Table Provenance help
Comments (11)The patented table support thingies were a later innovation....like after 1900. The older tables had wither a wooden turn around in the apron to support the leaf, or a pull out like the OP's. Most of the ones with the iron leaf support that I have seen were oak....telling me they date to the "oak period"> I have a love affair with walnut drop leaf tables...I used one as my diningroom table for about 25 years. It had 5 leaves and opened out to seat a bunch, but with the leaves stored and the sides down it was 32 by 29 and worked well for a small space. I gave it to my daughter when my mother died and I inherited her diningroom table. And I bought another oval walnut drop leaf that opened for leaves for my son when he married, and I bought a 36 inch square walnut drop leaf for my kitchen, and another larger one rectangular, about 40 by 52 or so, and another smaller end table with 2 drawers and leaves that flip up, and another square walnut one that I sold to a friend for a song....because I didn't need it. All have had the wooden turn around leaf support but for one that had a pull out like the OP's table. I love walnut drop leaf tables!!! If you sit at the short sides, you really need the casters....but if you sit where the leaves are or at the ends, there is more room. interesting, the rectangular tables never had casters, the oval ones did....See MoreRepair live edge dining table
Comments (4)In the roughly 10,000 pieces of furniture that I've repaired, there have been 3 that were not some sort of lacquer. Highly unlikely that any commercial furniture made after 1940 is shellac. The reason Pledge was noted was that its silicone oil will dramatically affect most finishes with a problem called "fish-eye" -- little craters when a finish is applied over the top of it. The lifting of the finish is most likely due to a crack in the finish that has allowed water to get underneath and compromise the finish. Letting it go is only get worse.. While there are lots of repair approaches depending upon materials and skill available, you've spent a lot of money on this table and I'd suggest not trying to do a DIY and really messing it up. Contact the seller and see if this is a warranted claim damage. If not, try to find a competent furniture repair technician. A repair might include excavating and inserting a "dutchman", stripping and refinishing the top, filling with polyester filler, epoxy, burn in sticks, or really thick "repair lacquer" depending upon closer evaluation....See Moredining chairs to pair with live edge table?
Comments (50)Hi! I know this is an old post but I judt came across because we just replaced our dining room table with a live edge one and don’t know what chairs to pair with. Was wondering what you went with. Also I noticed that you have what appears to be a one wall kitchen which is my goal for a kitchen makeover and was wondering how long that wall is from fridge to end. Any help would be great!
