please help us design a hall linen closet/wardrobe!
Comments (2)What you store is totally personal. I have three IKEA Pax 36" wardrobes (in the white, raised panel design) and love them. I have 2 deep ones for my clothes (there's only one closet in the master bd, and it's 4' wide) and one shallow one for linens. Few halls will be able to take a deep cabinet. Ours is 6' wide, and because of the door layout, a 2' deep closet would be claustrophobic. We do not have many linens, but our shallow cabinet is FULL with just linens for our family of four, plus some dirty clothes space at the bottom. The nice thing about the depth, though, is that everything is very accessible. We keep our meds, tp, etc. in the bathroom. Triage everything BEFORE investing in more storage. How many towels do you really need? How many meds are old? How many are duplicates? Lots of people have Nyquil AND Mucinex AND Sudafed without realizing that there is only ONE effective OTC decongestant, ONE effective OTC expectorant, and ONE effective OTC cough suppressant. Have a small bottle of decongestant/expectorant for the day (cough suppressant optional), one expectorant only for night plus Afrin for night use in emergencies, and that's it. With a bottle of pain killers and a swig of the alcohol of your choice, and you can recreate whatever branded blend you desire with a lot less total space. The basic rule is to learn to check ingredients before buying and make sure you don't duplicate products....See MoreLinen Closet - Update and a Question
Comments (32)Katy-lou - thank you for the link. I like their finishes and am looking into their edge mount pulls: I'd welcome input from anyone who has used an edge pull. Lawjedi - I've thought about glass pulls but haven't found any pulls (vs. knobs) which I like. Thank you for the links. The rails and stiles are 2" wide. Thanks robotropolis and canuckplayer. Some drop pulls don't hit the wood; still, good point. EAM44 - I was thrilled to see the Anthropologie pictures and did spend some time photoshopping. Love them and especially love the mercury glass. However, nothing I liked. (Hence the silence). You know me - I like the unusual but for this cabinet, I just love the simplicity and just haven't found anything yet which adds vs. detracts. rococogurl - thanks for hanging in there and the specific advise as to knob placement. I spent some time on Houzz and found these three pictures of shaker cabinets, with pulls, which spoke to me. However, my quandry is that a 1" protrusion is in line with the door trim on the right - I don't want a handle which sticks out farther than this. You said it very nicely - I want something that enhances the geometry of the cabinet. What do you think of the edge mount pulls posted above? Love how these pulls are positioned. I would do all horizontal. That's a lot of cabinets there girl! OK full disclosure here. I'm calling it a linen closet but it's more a multi purpose cabinet. I have no idea what I'll store in the top part but my purpose in building this, was to create drawers for the afghans and light comforters we keep out in the family room. So, drawers will be fairly light. Thanks bpathome, may_flowers - I did follow what you're saying. Good points. a2 - width is 36". I'm not worried about anything catching on pulls or even handles with 2" protrusion (cabinet is out of the normal walk path). I'll think about one long pull but like the two pull look (as in above pictures). Thanks bicyclegirl - glass is from Bendheim and I'm very pleased with how it turned out. I've even thought about seeing if I could get custom glass knobs made using the same glass. Thanks mdln 5....See MoreNot quite sure how to take this?????
Comments (38)OK, I'm glad I'm not the only one confused by the whole idea of "trading houses". I guess what OP is really saying he he will sell his house to the builder for (just throwing out some numbers) $200K and then take out a mortgage for $400K to buy the builder's house. So the builder will get out of his $400K mortgage/construction loan and take on a smaller 200K loan. The builder still needs to sell that house, but his risk is only 200K rather than 400K. SO, OP is has to pay closing costs on selling his house, will have to do 100% financing to cover the purchase price, and still come up with several thousand more for prepays and costs on buying the new house. The builder, OTOH, may have enough cash to buy OP's house outright and certainly should have funds to cover closing cost. It seems to me OP is taking a HUGE risk and the builder actually seems like a decent guy. It just seems like an incredibly bad idea, IMO....See MoreMy Grandparents old buffet...should I take it??
Comments (28)My vote is for the entryway. While symmetry is often most pleasing on the eye, it is not always possible (and if overdone can be downright boring). You can make up for a lack of symmetry with a sense of balance. The most important thing is that it flow in the room and is anchored by other elements in the room. Perhaps you can center it relative to the wall closet opposite? Which gives it is sense of purpose so that these two areas become your organization/storage for indoor/outdoor items, mail, etc. One of the side shelves could even be a purse/briefcase (or later diaperbag) repository. I recommend the mirror and lamps similar to mine. The mirror serves not only as decor, but function so you can make a last minute check on appearance before heading out the door. Didn't you have a mantle clock? If so, that'd work well in the center, probably better than my pitcher given the proposed location. If you put decor on the top you will be less inclined to clutter it up--esp. if you designate one of the drawers for "clutter". It works with the spindle table in the room, but in this case I would not put a mirror above the spindle table, instead some artwork would look nice there, or perhaps a chair where someone could sit and put on their shoes. Perhaps even revist the idea of angling the spindle table so that everything is not linear. My take is a bit different than teacats in that I prefer not only woods to match or be very similar within a room, but the style as well. Your style seems similar to mine in that you have a mix of transitional and antique going on. Do you have a family room also? If not, then it would be a good thing to have a few bare spots in the LR to keep the future baby's playthings. I can see it working well as a salon piece also, but would be concerned the finish would get damaged by all the hair care products, scissors, etc. unless you were to get a glass top made for it....See MoreAlex Zee
