I have numerous Perennial plants that I purchased, but never had an opportunity to plant them this Fall. They are still in pots. I live in central Arkansas, is it too late to plant them? If so, can I bury the pots and wait until Spring to plant?

i would tip them out of their pot at the store .... and see if there is any new root growth .. white tips on such ... if so.. they are alive .. if not dead .. walk on by ... i would also ask if they are warrantied.. BEFORE i bought them ... once i established they were viable ... and warrantied.. i would bring them home... i would dig a hole.. tip them out of the pot.. break the media into the hole... mix it all up ... spread out the roots on a cone of soil .... and plant them .. and water properly for the rest of the year ... they are not children.. i would presume there is more than enough fert in the media.. and i would never feed them again ... ever ... they need no 'revival' ... no singing.. chanting.. snakes.. anything.. other than warming spring soil ... and proper water ... dont make this a bigger deal than it need be ... if zone appropriate.. and properly handled by the nursery.. it just shouldnt be that big a deal .... on the other hand.. if they have been sitting in the parking lot of bigboxstore... i probably wouldnt bother .. hence the warranty demand ... either they knew how to winter them over.. and will guarantee them ... or they hope to find a rube to buy empty pots of used media ... with a dead plant in them ... a good nurseryman.. would tip them out of the pot.. and show you live roots ... good luck .... ken

We're on the other side of Lake Ontario from Rochester and up a bit from Toronto. Late November seems reasonable. You can't imagine how unpleasant (very cold hands) it is to chop through perhaps an inch (by then) of frozen soil and plant spring bulbs in mid December. As said elsewhere, I find no problem in overwintering perennials, planted in garden soil, in pots outside. Water up to the time of freezing. Ours do fine, frozen solid, in a protected place (e.g. against a wall) covered by the snow. As per Ken (not that he referred to this exactly), the soil in the pots should be about the same as the soil in the garden. As a general rule, here at least, plants grown in growers' peat-perlite mix should have most of it pulled off before being planted in the garden. Otherwise, here at least, the peat-perlite mix will freeze, in winter, at a different rate to the garden soil around the plant and the plant is likely to be killed.

Hi My two cents. A definition of terms as related to this forum. Botany particularly in contrast to other sciences such as horticulture,Agriculture,landscaping.Microbiology. Clear definition of a plant.Would assume most interest would lie in vascular plants?? So a definition of this along with a note of the exceptions.Fungi,Lichens Commensuls molds mildews and microscopic.Obviously these could be a forum in themselves lol A guideline for a question within botany rather than Horticulture ,My assumption is that Botany is natural events within the plant world?? Not say manmade hybrids.or culture?? Maybe the basics on how a plant survives and reproduces? Maybe only vascular plants?? Maybe some references to books?? Since there are so many other forums dealing with many subjects a guideline on what type of question to post here?? Gary
