Storm Zeta Aftermath

We had the winds/downpour and luckily no big trees fell. Everything is covered with wet leaves, pinestraw and sticks and branches. My hosta are buried. We are ahead in when the leaves usually fall. I normally mower mulch leaves weekly until Dec 15th or so but I may get done earlier this year. We may be without power for 3 or 4 days. The generator has ben a great investment. Nothing has been normal or usual this year.

frankielynnsie..I'm sorry to hear about the mess in your area from severe weather..my worst power outage was 5 hours..it seemed much longer!..several days would indeed be terrible..I hope things return to normal quickly..

That sounds like a scary storm! Hope you are OK and that your power will be back on soon. This certainly is not a normal year!

We keep finding things that were affected, like the pump losing its prime at the second well, a pickup with a dead battery and more problems. We primed the pump, it's okay. DH got the big generator started today to be ready for whatever later storms come. The truck can just sit and wait for two hands. The sawed-up tree is still on the driveway until someone comes to help later this week. I hauled off all the little limbs I could lift, just so it looks as if we're 'doing something' about it. This weekend was just so much better than last -- and I removed the staples from DH's incisions today. Hooray! We didn't have to drive 60 miles each way to Doctor's office, they mailed a staple remover when I asked if I could do it. (Children, do not attempt this maneuver at home if you've not done it before.) DH says he is going to tell the doctor that he was afraid to complain, for fear I would put them back, LOL. I hope things will return to normal soon for residents of the Gulf Coast who were in the path of Gustav. We're watching Hanna now; stay safe, FlowerLady. Nell

Well, as we say in Hurricane Alley.....it could have been sooo much worse. Sorry to hear about the damage.....it is always heartbreaking to lose trees that you have nurtured for so long. My Abius both went over in the last two storms we have had and yet were both quite willing to be propped up without too much negative long term consequences. Bananas are even more resilient. Now Irene is heading this way. Seems she is inclined to gather some more strength on her way. Hoping she stays out to sea. Thanks for the report, Gwenn. Good luck with the staking of your damaged trees. Hope that recovery is rapid and as complete as possible. Harry

Glad to hear that you came through it without too much dislocation or discomfort, Moni. Watch those chainsaws ... mistakes can be costly to keeping one's bodyhood intact! Small saws do for fingers - chain saws do for legs (or worse). We wouldn't want to have to report that Moni wasn't quite all there any more! I hope that the rest of the year goes exactly right for you and yours. ole joyful

Last night a front with wind gusts came through and the pine tree used by the red bellied woodpeckers for nesting came down with a big boom around 1AM. I will miss watching them feeding their babies next spring. The babies would practically climb out of the nest to get to the food their parents brought. Luckily it missed landing on my muscadine vine trellis.

We got our power back in the night so they got it on before they thought but our neighbors across the road are still without power.

The good news was that my yankee hummingbird was not blown away. He came to eat yesterday and today. He will continue his journey soon and I will miss him.

We have a camping generator--2000 watt that we use for camping and when the power goes out (wind storms, ice storms), which happens frequently. It is marvelous! Enough to run the refrigerator, a light, my computer and modem, and the tv.

Glad to hear some good news. Too bad about the pine tree. I would miss seeing baby woodpeckers too. What a shame.

We have a generator too. They are great for those times when you need it (which isn't that often, thankfully). I remember it to be very noisy though so we strived to not have it run after 9 p.m. and until morning.
