Siding 101 - input please!
Comments (14)You are probably referring to siding made of treated OSB with a water resistant surface lamination (like SmartSide from LP) which is an "engineered" siding because it is made of wood strands that are glued together. Unfortunately, the manufacturers will call these materials anything that helps sales and the use of the term, "composite", is apparently an attempt to ride the coat tail of composite materials like fiber-cement siding. This stuff is in no way similar to fiber-cement and probably has the shortest life and requires the most maintenance of all the materials you could put on your house. It's only advantage is that it is cheap....See MoreFIBREX Composite Windows !!!! The Wave of the Future
Comments (226)@dottt1, they call it APC, its in the family of cellular PVC with some secret sauce mixed in as I understand it. No wood component, but stronger than vinyl, welded unlike fiberglass, and solid lineals without chambers. Great window. On the air sealing and birds, I'd agree with Todd on all points. If the home was built in the last 25 years, there was a time where they were being sealed up pretty tightly without adequate ventilation causing indoor air quality issues. The remedy however is not to get leaky windows or leave areas unsealed, but to have systems in place for that to be controlled and dialed in to balance air leakage (energy efficiency) with air exchange (air quality). An energy auditor or home performance consultant would be the go to if you ever wanted to explore that....See MoreNeed professional opinion on siding installation issues
Comments (7)You were critical of the work so why would you be critical of someone who shares your opinion or do you not have a sense of humor? You should be grateful that someone with Worthy's reputation would read your entire post. I don't pretend to know as much as Worthy but I suspect this is not a fiber-cement panel with a stucco finish, its a fiber-cement panel with an imitative textured surface that is apparently intended to be face nailed so I'm guessing it relies on caulk and paint to hide the fasteners. I don't think you provided a brand name or manufacturer's installation instructions so I don't know for sure how it should be installed but it doesn't appear to have any flashing at the horizontal joints which the manufacturer would certainly have required and I suspect special square drive s.s. bugle head screws or ribbed wafer-head screws would be recommended too. But in addition to a manufacturer's spec and recommendations you need to tell the contractor in writing how you want it done and you certainly had an advantage after seeing how it should not be done and reading the manufacturer's instructions. I would add flashing where missing and vertical battens to hide the nails. That might also relieve the deadly plainness of the building....See MoreHardie Siding, LP Smart Siding or Everlast Siding
Comments (8)I'm getting ready to build next spring and I've only read good things about Everlast. Seems to be used mostly on the east coast. The only issue is they do not offer a shingle version which I need. I would like to use the same brand on this house that has shiplap, shingle and board and batten siding for color match purposes. I've also read good things about NuCedar (shingle siding) and Celect. Both of those products are cellular PVC with a baked on paint. There are way too many threads on Houzz regarding how bad the cement board products are. They seem very very dependent on perfect installation and what climate they are used in. I'm in Michigan so I am not messing with a product that likes to absorb water if not perfectly primed....See MoreMary Elizabeth
