Why did you paint / stain your honey oak cabinets?
Comments (11)Oh man, where to start! First of all, thank you to all of you for your responses. See. . . I told you that you guys are great! morton5 I will definitely check out Ikea. Most dark colored cabinets are shown with a more modern style but we like a little more traditional look, so weÂll look at Tidaholm & Liljestad. sarschlos, good paint job, cabinets really pop. I probably should have done the "stop gap" painting job a few years ago when we first started contemplating this project. I know what you mean about not wanting to put new counters on the old cabinets. But I hate my old tile counters and top mount sink even more than the cabinets, so this is not an option for us. nomorebluekitchen & morton5, I also donÂt want to waste but I figure worst-case scenario my garage is going to get some nice oak cabinets. dede711, see itÂs people like you that cause me problems ;-) . . . your kitchen looks FANTASTIC! And makes me feel like, "I can do that" and be very happy with the results. Looking at your before picture is like looking at my own, complete with the oak fluorescent light fixture. Your after picture is just . . . wow! remodel1958, now that is a great outside of the box idea about making the add on cabinets a contrasting finish. Definitely all the rage right now and will be a consideration. And yes, IÂm sure I too will go broke saving money. aidan_m, yes layout is probably going to be the deciding factor for us. Boxes are in good shape and already have some pullouts. Even the doors are well-constructed raised panel, but with an arch style, whereas we like square. We are working on the layout now so weÂll see where it leads us. IÂm sure IÂll have more questions for the forum to come. Anyway, thank you all again for your thought filled answers and inspiration!...See MorePaint for kitchen w/ honey oak cabinets and terra cotta floor
Comments (36)arcy, I can reposition the island. Funny you mentioned that because my mom hopped on the wagon to help me figure out what to do with the kitchen and she, too, suggested I reposition it. She also pointed out that the otherside of the island is much more attractive than the side that's exposed to the dining room. I will turn it next time I'm at the house and see what it's like. Thanks! Also, thanks for the wallpaper suggestion. I'll check out the collection at SW for ideas just in case. :) annkathryn, your cabinets are GORGEOUS! Thank you for the inspiration photos. They are gentle reminders of ways I can live with what I've got for now until I'm able to do what you did with transforming them. Great job! As promised, here are better photos of the kitchen: Here you can see the two green samples as well as a TINY bit of the Toasted Cashew I tried to sample peeking through Backsplash details (there is some splattering from cooking, that's not the tile) Close up of the tile in the kitchen (the grout will be cleaned when we move in so it'll lighten up a bit, the tile that will be installed in the dining room and living room will be similar in color to the lighter tile in the dividing strip shown here) Looking into the kitchen from the DR Someone requested a photo of the view from the back of the kitchen looking out to the DR -- pardon my lovely SIL, she was rinsing paint from her hands and the mini rollers, and my hand wasn't very steady here My mom suggested I take advantage of the side of the island shown in the above photo and turn it outward towards the DR. She also mentioned the idea of painting the island as some suggested here. I really like that idea! Hope this helps you all more than the previous photos did....See MoreHelp?! How to get Honey Oak to match new cabinets??
Comments (22)@millworkman Honestly, that might not be an option given the high number of people in the same position I am in. Much like the attempt to get a restoration company (where you get an answering service, are lucky to get a call back within 24 hours, when most reviews say they were out in an hour or less... some have messages saying "we cannot help anyone new we are backlogged"). I also don't know what it would cost. I'm hoping with the massive disaster, the adjuster will be more understanding. It doesn't help my husband is a salvager by nature and doesn't see the point of destroying things that are technically fine. (sigh) He feels keeping the upper cabinets is perfectly okay because he just wants it done and surely they can make it match... @latifolia Getting a lot of estimates right now is also challenging, as most good contractors were already busy with people remodeling due to COVID and low interest rates (and no homes on the market to move to here, I think inventory is 40% of what it usually is). Adding tons of apartment buildings, hotels, and schools that were damaged, along with all of the homes means you might be waiting a long time to get someone to get back to you, and the last thing I want is one of those contractors that works one day a week and rotates between 6 jobs or something (I have heard horror stories of that) because at least now my kitchen is somewhat useable, compared to when it is fully emptied for whatever we have done....See MoreWhat color LVP with honey oak cabinets?
Comments (31)Dyan, What a diff. Very nice job. I bet they're very happy w/their work. Show them some of these photos I've listed to see if they could paint over that tile around the fireplace. I like the black mantle, but a stencil painted tile would look so much better. (they can retile later on down the road). They have a lot of tutuorials for tiles on the floor, but it could easily be done on those around that box. Complete how-to: https://eastcoastcreativeblog.com/2012/09/stenciled-faux-tile-fireplace-tutorial.html paint it a base color like white or black, and then get a properly sized stencil and do the second color. I did a quick photoshop with this one. I like the addition of the warm wood mantle over the black. did a little mantle styling. that pic actually reflects a woven pendant, so I gave you one surrounded in the black. I think that black lantern light is a bit harsh for the colors in this room. Same photo using the woven pendant light. Here's the photo I used. The tiles have a bit of black, but they have that griege tone and a soft blue gray. I think it's nice w/the flooring. Stencil is from Royal Design Studio If they like more of the black and white, they could do that as well. This link actually has a really good tutorial using diff paint. Cost was $110 for the fireplace makeover https://jessicawellinginteriors.com/faux-cement-tile-fireplace/ of course you could choose any color or design. I thought these colors might work well w/the room colors. (is the wall color really that green looking in person?) do they plan on painting that kitchen island? I think if they just did that one, it would look great! they could add a bit of wood trim on the panel so that it looks finished, and nicely done. looks so much better! You can see the wood cabs in the background to get an idea of how it looks. they could do any size trim, beadboard, shiplap, (This is General Finishes Milk Paint in Snow White. I've used it. It's an acrylic paint. They could easily use this on the oak island and any added trim work. Just prime everything first w/Zinsser oil base primer. Always sand prior and after the primer) mdf pieces,,,,and it's relatively simple. Few hours would make a big impact. The island they could paint in a charcoal or black if they like. (paired w/black hardware)...See Morekudzu9
