1940's/1950's Pomona Ceramic Tiles....where do I find more?
Comments (11)I was trying to figure out what to do with my kitchen tile---yellow, probably 50s.....same kind of a thing as you.....caused by replacing a countertop that had post-formed backsplash. I found some places that would custom make tile to match. Try searching on "custom replacement tile" or something like that. As it turned out, I found a very close match in new tile so I didn't have to have any made. Weirdly, I found a close color match at Home Depot from the United States Ceramic Tile Company. The sample board for special orders was placed way up high on the wall and I almost missed it. I did separate the old tile from the new tile with a black liner tile so that the colors weren't right next to each other. They are very, very close in color though. I practically had a nervous breakdown before I found them, expecting to have a huge problem. If you can't find something, can you think of any kind of a skinny little cabinet or something to put there that wouldn't look totally odd? Sometimes the stuff I like the best comes out of a situation like this....See MoreIs this flooring tile asbestos?
Comments (10)I removed about 20 asbestos flooring tiles in an outside porch. After reading the proper way to remove them I did everything wrong. I did wear work gloves a general dust mask but i used a hammer and pinch bar to remove them. I only cracked a few. But then i used a dry vac to remove all debris. I also did not use any protective eye wear.. There was a lot of dust in the room but mostly from the dry wall I ripped down. I still need to tear up the sub floor should i be concerned about exposer ? After reading the haz mat websites you should destroy all exposed clothing and clean tools. I guess I am most worried about fibers getting in my eyes. The tiles were silver grey but very brittle and broke easily...See Morelooking for flooring suggestions for a 1950's kitchen
Comments (26)@iroll: Your floor is great! Yeah, I can see that there are a lot of different colours in the tile. It seems to give it some depth. I really love the uniform look. Do you notice seams at all? So i *think* I've decided on thick stripes running across the width of the galley. I got a quote for the yellow and off white marmoleum ("natural corn" and "barbados"). @deedles: maybe the butter colour you mention is the "natural corn"? The yellow is a perfect yellow. Yes, expensive, but really lovely and more vibrant that the vinyl. My thought process around the use of stripes is that I can use the 3X1-foot pieces, which are less expensive than the 1X1s. @a2gemini: the marmoleum is cork-backed, I believe, but don't quote me on that. The dealer I talked to also recommended a cushy underpad for it, so it seems like it would be pretty easy on the back. My mother is telling me to get cork ;-)...See More1950s galley kitchen floor
Comments (7)VCT is vinyl composition tile, AKA the tile that is found in many (most?) school buildings, hospitals, and retail spaces. Before you dismiss it as being too institutional, take a look at it in residential spaces. It comes in a huge array of colors, is an easy DIY, and it's CHEAP! I have it in my whole basement and it's very practical. You can easily to it in a black and white checkerboard, it would look great in this kitchen....See MoreRelated Professionals
