If you are close to a hardware store, a staple remover tool is worth the small investment. (I don’t see one in the photo of your tools.) Your stairs will look wonderful!

Thanks the staples aren’t bad to get out it’s the very long deeply imbedded brads at the under side of the lip of the tread... these guys were really intense with their fastening!! DH has no trouble pulling them with needle nose pliers so I’m letting him help❤️😊 I’ll take a good picture of them tomorrow when we do part 2.

The house is a 1910 FourSquare Fori, it is heart pine. The exterior wood siding we just restored was primarily poplar and heart pine and some chestnut . We had very little rotted wood. Stay tuned for more tomorrow 🥴

I dislike bare wooden stairs because of the noise.

Haha Lars when we were kids the running up and down the wood stairs was indeed noisy! I wish we were that agile and energized now lol! I can‘t hear anything when we use the wooden portion of these stairs so far.

In our 1890 home in AL we opened the attic for living space and added a beautiful oak staircase with a landing and winder stair portion. Never had noise there either for the 15 yrs we were in that house.

Perhaps it’s the quality of the stair construction or the exuberance of the users. Anyway the beautiful wood outweighs any noise concerns. 😊

Once you get it all cleaned up and finished, be really careful on those steps. We did exactly the same thing and they were terribly slippery. We had a teenage dog at the time who romped up and down the steps. I can't count the number of times she fell down the steps before she finally figured out that they were slippery and she had to go slow. I tried to never go down them in socks.

I wish we had something so nice to uncover, but ours are carpet covered and construction grade lumber, never finished. I want to do pretty wood treads and something other than white risers, but I have realized that we need to keep the carpet for our nearly 15 yr old lab who has arthritis and can slip or slide a bit at times. I look forward to your riser surprise i the meantime.

We are fortunate as I mentioned to Lars in that we are used to bare wood stairs and haven't ever had a problem with slipping. My only bad falls on stairs were carpeted stairs and my barefeet slipped right off. In the one case in 2012 I had a concussion from the fall . My BIL just slipped and fell on his carpeted stairway as well and his is the other one I fell on.

I've seen some lovely stairs on line while looking for ideas for our risers. I'm excited to see the outcome. The only staples we didn't get completely out are the tiny ones with very long straight sharp spikes and they are just too hard to pull. DH was able to do it but his hands are way too important for his piano and clarinet playing so we will defer to the pros !
