Ipe Deck Board Spacing

Hello. Im currently having an Ipe deck installed at my house. My contractor is installing 5/4 x 6 boards. The deck is mostly sitting 6" over a concrete slab. I realize that it is not advised to build that close to a concrete slab, but it's too late at this point. The slab has a good pitch to it and he oiled both sides of the boards. He also built ventilation on the sides and front of deck. I also live in Los Angeles where it's hot and dry most of the year.

My question is, what is a proper gap size between boards? He started installing with 1/4" gap, which looks big to me. He says he can go smaller, but he won't be responsible for any cupping or buckling. Im concerned that since he's installing in Oct/Nov, the gap is going to get bigger in the summer. Any advice would greatly be appreciated.
