hello all!

we are about to close on this 1950s ranch with a full walkout basement.

we've got our work cut out for us on the interior (which we've got handled so far). but the exterior is throwing us for a loop.

the vinyl siding is only 5 years old so that'll stay. perhaps we'll paint it (not sure if a color scheme yet)

we're replacing the front door since the existing one is literally falling off the hinges.

any ideas on how to charge the stone around the entry?

light fixtures? railing ideas for the entry? color schemes?

help!

I would replace the fake stone with vertical cedar and add a metal and tension wire railing. Use vertical cedar on the deck skirting. Get modern lights. I would stain the cedar so it retains its natural color and doesn't go gray. You don't need plantings in front of the deck, but add some more to the left side. I like the color of the vinyl.

wow, small (reasonably priced) changes make a huge difference!

would you do anything with the white trim on the bay window or the front facing fascia if the budget allowed?

We've been in our 1949 home for 14 years. In that time we've upgraded our electrical service to 200 ($3000), replaced windows (17K), torn out both bathrooms (3K, but DIY), replaced part of cast iron main sewer pipe because is rusted (was pitched wrong in a spot so water sat in it, cost was rolled into basement finishing so not sure how much $$), new roof (5K). Those were the only age-related needs the house has had -- we're perpetual tinker-ers so we've also replaced doors and woodwork, added crown moulding. Well worth doing all of it, the house is built like a rock, and to be honest, our previous house was only 20 years old and on the verge of needing all of the same stuff -- the windows here were 55 years old before we replaced them, the ones in our 1980's house were 15 when they were showing signs of failure -- same with the bathrooms. I honestly think you're much better off with a mid-century build than with anything late 20th century. Really.

I will second that the look reminds me more of a 50s/60s ranch than a home from twenty years earlier. To me, it appears those two gabled roof areas are newer and not original to the home. I imagine the original roof line was only one straight run. A new walkway could do a lot here in addition to landscaping. Make it curved though to add some interest and contrast to all the straight lines of the brick and siding. Painting the door a jazzy color would help. House numbers on the side of the brick running vertically and in a modern font style in a black color to tie with the light is another option. It is a cute home and landscaping is going to bring it really alive. Congrats.

I can't believe we are doing it.....but.....we are selling our 2600 sf craftsman and moving around the corner to a 1500 sf 1980's ranch. Hello downsizing! Majority of the budget is consumed by the interior update and back porch addition. Painting the brick is not a option...at least, not now. I have a few ideas for a facelift and would appreciate advise/opinions. Remove tiny porch columns and railing. Replace with three cedar (stained) columns. Replace storm door with a cedar (stained) storm door. Definitely remove shutters from window under porch (wrong size) I'm not sure about removing all shutters. I don't think the existing shutters are the correct size. But I am concerned that removing them would make the home too plain. I would like to add cedar window boxes...I think. :) Shingles are dark grey. I really need help with paint colors for trim. I am considering removing the window muntins and painting the window sills black (inside and out) and trimming with a creamy white. Yikes! Make me nervous!! The windows are all wood and in excellent condition. If I keep the shutters, what color? Charcoal, Dark Blue/Navy, Olive Green? Of course, the landscaping will be redone. I really need some advise on exterior color choices and some of my ideas. I love this little ranch. She is so adorable! My style is mostly transitional - nothing too trendy.

Is that vinyl? If you like the charcoal houssaon used, the better paint stores have specialty paints for vinyl. You could go further with that illustration by doing the garage door in cedar, or painting it and the window charcoal. I like your siding and think it will work with the addition of the cedar and charcoal. Personally, I would want the stubby mushroom shrubs in the front and the cedars in the back removed. Landscaping will be key here.

@decoenthusiaste. interesting idea with the garage door. do you know if it would be possible to just clad the existing door with cedar and stain it?

The tensioners and pulley system are designed for that particular weight of door, so no, you cannot add wood onto the door. Yet you can easily paint the current door for a "wood-look," using a kit. I would certainly paint the whole exterior and change out the stone for either wood cladding or something else. I would also match the bay window to the door and trim... as well as the garage door. And I think fresh new neat and green landscape would go a very far way!

The green siding is pretty and houssaon's rendering appears to be the most attractive. Good luck and post updates!

Agree that @houssaon's rendering is great. If you paint the siding, when painting vinyl siding the color must be the same shade or lighter than the current color; darker colors retain more heat and leave the siding vulnerable to premature warping.
