This needs a rail on the close side or it is a safety hazard, and the hand rail needs to be able to go continuously from top to bottom, so it would be helpful to see up the stairs.

What style are you going for? Would a classic wood railing in trim color not work? You could go black metal if you wanted something a bit more unique, but you'd need other black metal accents to compliment it.

Thanks for the concern but it is remaining open for now. It is impossible to get anything large up or down the stairs with a railing there. All adults in the home so we are fine with it.

As far as seeing up the stairs its just a blank wall.

I'd go with a wood rail painted to match the rest of your trim.

I ordered some black metal handrails on the internet. It was a company that makes all types. You might try to google handrails & see what you find.

Left side cannot remain open for safety reasons. And as Beth alludes to, those stairs look awful steep. You now need to bring the entire magilla up to current building code.

You can't leave it open. Even adults can slip and fall. Get a railing like the last one Beth posted, instead of one with individual spindles, so if absolutely necessary, you can temporarily remove it to get a large item up the stairs.

The stairs are remaining open for now as we are doing renovations upstairs and need to be able to move things ups and down as needed. They definitely aren’t steep by the way, just normal stairs. We will be looking for a removable banister for that side when we are finished.
