Comments (8)I think this is a candidate for refacing with wood mantle, stucco/smooth plaster over the brick, and put a craftsman style tile around the firebox opening and on the floor. The brick mass dominates the room and not in a good way. Designing a mantle so that it coordinates with the ceiling cove molding, and other details helps integrate the fireplace into the room with other design elements. Tile that goes into the firebox makes the brick recede even further into the past. Here are two simple designs we did over brick mass. Comments (23)We have a nice Mendota gas fireplace, installed last year. Builder said "doesn't need a hearth". Installed the wood floor all the way up to the fieplace...and turned on the fireplace, and the floor was hot. Contacted Mendota. They said fireplace has to be 6" off the floor in order to not need hearth. Since ours is flush...now we have a hearth stone. Comments (3)My husband and I have been looking at tile samples for our bathroom shower alcove and after looking at the kitchen photos, I suggest Calacatta Michelangelo from Florida Tile that is a Precious glazed porcelain tile that looks just like Carrara Marble without the cost and is much more durable!
