Preserving the historical integrity of your neighborhood

The street I live on is one of the oldest streets in our small town, and used to be very charming in its historic nature. Recently, we had a major road construction project and we unfortunately lost part of that historic charm. A dozen huge mature trees in the boulevard were cut down and the stone carriage wall was demolished, in addition to losing a chunk of our front yards. All of this to widen the street and bring it up to code.

My neighbors and I are working to convince our city council to invest in some sort of beautification project to help bring back some of the historic charm of what once was. My question is: what sorts of things has your city done, or what would you like them to do, to preserve the historical integrity of your neighborhood? Nothing will replace the old stone wall or mature trees, but we're looking for little ways we can beautify the street and maintain the history of our small town. Thoughts?
