You should have enough space to have a tub and a shower, depending on the size of vanities, placement of doors, whether you need a toilet enclosure and where the existing plumbing is located. It may be tight, esp. if you want a decent sized shower. Moving the toilet is a PITA. The more plumbing you keep in its original spot, the cheaper it will be. For a quick and dirty (and free) mock up you can use the arrange-a-room tool at BHG. First you specify your room size (unfortunately, their minimum room size is 8 feet by 8 feet, so you'll have to specify a room size of 11 by 8 and ignore one foot of it). Then you pick from among a variety of plumbing fixtures (look in furniture and select bathroom. You'll find toilets, sinks, vanities, corner and regular showers and tubs, etc.). You can also add windows and doors (look in architectural items) You can rotate all of the fixtures, specify sizes, etc. by clicking on info once you drag the fixtures into the room. The program allows you to save, retrieve and print out up to 25 designs. Nothing too sophisticated, but it's easy and it does the trick. Here is a link that might be useful: arrange a room

Can you draw elevations? Section details? An electrical layout? A detailed tile layout? Can you tell the difference in grays with green undertones bs Purple undertones? Do you know the difference between wall tile and floor tile? Do you understand the difference between thermostatic and pressure balancing? Can you design a shower valve and control handle layout for more than one outlet? Do you understand the pros and cons of the different waterproofing methodologies? Do you know the required building codes that constrain fixture placement? You don’t know what you don’t know. Designers know. And they work with the GC to make sure that you don’t end up with a purplish wall tile on the floor with massive lippage and a big clash with the pinkish tile that you chose for the wall, and run out of hot water 3 minutes into your shower that leaks out onto your floor and into the closet.

I would love to do something like that and have a nice big shower! I’d probably leave the current sink vanity location as is and put the new linen closet where the shower currently is, would that look ok? The house built in the 60s, so I just get nervous of running into more issues than we already going to encounter (I know regardless there will be some issues when remodeling) if we start moving plumbing. Our return air also runs through the slab. I will digest it and maybe I can talk myself into it over the next few months. If not, then a built in linen closet/hamper storage would be very useful!

I'm concerned that I'm not getting any answers here. If this is done wrong I would like to know. She's overseas for work in a totally off the grid and remote place, and I can't even communicate with her until her location changes and she has some cell service. I'm not "in charge" of this remodel, but if there is something wrong, I can't un-see it, so I would like to address it with the foreman if needed.
