Yeck, Winters Here :-((
Comments (7)Rita, I agree, and all I can do is dream about spring too. I have never tried to heat the bird baths, something to think about, I put them away, but I also have an outside cat ( he has a shelter ) who may just love the heated bird bath, so maybe it's not a good idea for me. We got hit with the second lake effect snow, as they call it. It is really early and they don't always extend south enough to get me, but it did!!!!! At least I had just finished my mulching, although I had not finished cutting back my iris. Supposed to do that late fall, what happened to late fall? So I am told that the snow is a good cover for the plants, OK I believe it but I don't have to like it. I'm attaching a picture of a lone DL tag standing out in the snow!!! and so I don't depress too many I will also attach a picture of a local DL farm from this past summer. I just put that picture on my desktop. It helps chase the winter blues away, along with reading this forum. Also, thanks to all for posting when intros are out, especially you Rita, as I like the hardy and extended bloom. My wishlist did explode. Cindy...See MoreWell, winter's here... again.
Comments (19)One thing I couldn't help but notice last night and then today is that while my plantings seemed to have faired well, and indeed most yards in my neighborhood look 'okay', ALL the daylilles in the park got HAMMERED. Even the ones that look, to my eye, to be in sheltered location have gone bright yellow and floppy. I would not have expected 40ðF temps to take such a toll on bulbs, but I guess it did. Or perhaps it wasn't so much the low as the temperature swing? But the butterflies made it through. They returned to the yard today and even brought with them a couple of Monarchs....See Morethese over wintered here
Comments (10)William, I leave mine in the ground every year. always have. I just put a heavy layer a mulch over them after the first freeze. so they won't come up when it thaws. Most of the time I use leaves or straw and them put my regular bark mulch back on top. I hove only lost one or two that way all the years I have done this. Just be sure to pull all of it back in the spring when it starts to rain and the freeze is past. Or they will rot. I don't put any mulch back around them until the rains let up so to prevent rot. they really don't have that much growth before it gets too hot to need the mulch. Comments (2)Pretty little fellow. He might try, but may be unsuccessful, as NJ gets awful cold in winter. If I wanted to keep him, I might grab him one day, place him in an aquarium, feed him crickets from the pet shop, and place him back in the pond when it warms up in Spring. By next summer, there might be enough muck and dead plant matter on the bottom to support a Bullfrog (insulation and support), and more than likely, since he showed up, I imagine many more of his little friends will too in the future....See Moretexanjana
