Design Dilemma Kitchens

Please help me,

purchased this home with a very rustic vibe. I painted the cabinets white and purchased stick on tiles but I can’t seem to be comfortable in this space. There is absolutely no space and I want to get a island or peninsula. we extend the window above the sink by removing the upper cabinet to the left of the sink. To the right of the first picture is a small wall with cabinets and a small fridge. I do not have a table in the kitchen currently. kitchen leads down to a sunken living room which is also a design dilemma. windows are awkwardly shaped and I just don’t know how to remodel this kitchen and design it.

I agree. I fell in love with the house and intended a kitchen remodel but we need to save for this. I’m hoping to make it functional temporarily but can’t seem to figure out how.

Elizabeth, the floors have to go as they look better in photos. In person they scream cheap. It is cheap laminate. I will also have bare spots where the wall will be removed that I have to fix up. I was planning on putting some tile in the kitchen area but may just do hardwood throughout the whole house. I have also heard that the ikea cabinets hold up rather well but it seems that they use quite a bit of MDF with a foil over it. I personally would prefer a wood face as that sees quite a bit of abuse and potential liquid spills (I am just at the beginning with a 3 year old and 1.5 year old).

Thanks. We do spend a lot of time in the family room. That was my first thought actually of opening that wall. The initial problem with that wall between the family room and the kitchen is that it is a load bearing wall. The living room we use as more of a formal sitting room if we have friends over. My wife also has her desk there. My wife has also thought about making the living room the dining room. Personally I think that is a waste of space but am open to being convinced otherwise. My wife and I would like to have more of an open floor plan. Thus thinking of combining the kitchen and dining room into one room. We eat 99% of our meals at the dining room table, so the table would have to fit into the larger kitchen design concept. I would like to incorporate kitchen and eating together. To me the difficult part is all the doors in the kitchen... the sliding doors to outside, the family room door, hall door and basement door.

You’ve made charming choices! The island lighting is perfect. One of my favorite moments is the curve of ther counter stools repeated on the mat for the dog bowl. You must be thrilled with the outcome. I’m looking forward to seeing the custom cabinet doors and a light without glare over the sink. Nice!! We just did the same for a 15' x 12' kitchen with relatively moderately priced new appliances: Kitchenaid oven with convection (replacing the same that worked like a champ for over 22 years) cooktop, and rangehood, Bosch 300 dishwasher, Whirlpool refrigerator -- the total cost of which was still far less than the single Thermador refrigerator the young couple across the street bought for their kitchen remodel....this, by the way, was our preference, not from necessity...). New cabinets (painted finish), farmhouse sink, soapstone countertops, including an island, new lighting, backsplash, and an added skylight, which has been a definite plus. Total cost: $73K, in the high-cost-of-living San Francisco Bay Area.

Please post a fully-measured layout of the space under consideration and a sketch of the entire floor. Both can be either hand-drawn, computer generated, or drawn up with computer/app tools.

By "fully-measured", we mean a layout with the widths of each wall/window/door/doorway and the distances between each wall/window/door/doorway labeled. See a sample below. If something cannot be moved or changed, label it precisely on your layout (see post in sample) and tell us why it cannot be moved/changed -- we may have some ideas for you.

The sketch of the entire floor lets us see how the Kitchen relates to the rest of the home. It doesn't have to be to-scale, but it should accurately show how the rooms relate to each other and should include all interior & exterior doors. In addition, it will help us see how traffic flows in, around, and through the Kitchen. Label the front entry and family entry. The family entry is usually a garage or side entry, but it might not be. It's helpful to know which door you use to bring in groceries.

Regardless of how you draw it up (by hand, computer, etc.), please be sure all measurements are labeled.

Other questions...
- Tell us about you and your family and how you plan to use your Kitchen. All-adults? Empty Nesters? Children (now or in the future)?
- What appliances (& their sizes) do you plan to have?
- Where are you flexible? Can walls/windows/doors/doorways change (move, change size, add, delete)?
- Do you have a basement under the Kitchen or are you on a slab?

Anything you do now is a waste of money that kitchen needs a good KD and a gut job. We need a to scale plan to help at all. Stick on tile IMO only makes the space worse. BTW renos should not have started until you had a plan.
