Why do you need two sofas? And why recover the one you have? Both translate into $$$$. Consider a new sofa and two chairs. Add some Persian rug throw pillows (etsy).

Your wall art is interesting. Choosing throw pillows for the sofa in like tones, would make those gorgeous rugs work right into the scheme.

It could be because that’s the op’s preference. My long couch is better than two chairs. Nothing wrong with that.

I‘d pick a lighter color from the rug- looks dark cream or pale yellow on my screen.

I’d look up rooms with two couches and see if you like the look the same or different.

It could also be that OP hasn’t considered other options.

However, Sheelsback, I am not addressing you. Or rather, this post is not about you and your long sofa (which OP does not have).

A couple of ideas: mustard and charcoal. Both have a modern, dramatic feel, and I think look wonderful with your gorgeous rug and art.

Ignore these sofa styles, just using them to show the colors.

I consider Persian rugs to be a neutral, so just about any color will go. What I think is more important for a sofa than the color is the style, as far as looking current. While roll arm sofas are classics that can work well in a traditional or modern room, I think as long as your new sofas will have a straight back, compared to the lowered center your sofa has now, they'll be good.

Thank you all for your reply. The reason for a secondary couch is because the room is much larger than the picture shows and we do need the secondary couch for seating. The existing couch used to be in another apartment and it’s of excellent quality but now that I will have it in this room I was hoping for a congealed look and why I was thinking to upholster.

I would do both the same....I have an off white sofa ottoman and love seat in a room with a large Persian rug in the red tones and I like it a lot....on the other hand I have a soft rosy, cream and blue striped sofa in another room with a red toned Persian rug....and I like that look too, albeit more formal.
If you really have a huge room, you might think of the new sofa being very long and upholster it the same as the older one...unless you are looking for the balance of 2 like sized pieces. and please don't cheapen and compromise that lovely rug with cheap looking "persian rug" throw pillows.

We also have a red antique rug in our living room. I pulled a dark blue from the rug since that was the color I wanted. I think with your rug gold is the way to go.

I love two sofas in a living room. I like the crispness of white for sofas with red Persian rugs. But all the other suggestions work as well.

Do you think both sofas should be the same color? Alternatively how do you guys feels about a small L shaped sectional and a sofa?

Two sofas are much more flexible than a sectional and a sofa.

As far as colors, I will just put this here: slipcovers. I have two sofas from Crate + Barrel ordered several years ago during their annual upholstery sale and at the same time I ordered slipcovers.

I’d keep them the same color.
