Dirty retaining wall base- how would you hide this?

Hi! We have a one hundred foot long retaining wall in our backyard and a shallow amount of lawn for the kids to play. I want to hide the inevitable stains at the bottom of the wall (about 12” high max) that creep up after washing every time. I don’t want a shrub that takes up our precious lawn space so I need a planting bed with plants that can be kept very narrow against the wall. It gets some sun but the wall actually keeps the immediate base shaded so that’s probably why we get black and green stains maybe algae. It’s a hundred feet long so I need a cost effective solution and evergreen and dense so that it’s hidden year round. I looked at so many plant nurseries. I could get a bunch of 1 gallon wintergreen boxwoods for example but will they tolerate me keeping them very narrow to the wall? I would prefer no more than 18” of depth from wall. Thank you much!!
