Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

10 ft ceiling kitchen - stacked cabinets 36 + 30

we just purchased a home with 10 ft ceilings and we absolutely want stacked cabinets to the ceiling. without going custom, our kitchen designer suggested stacking 30 inch on top of a 36 inch, which laves room for zero molding/trim. i have never seen this before and cant seem to find a picture on the internet. has anyone seen or done this? have pictures? thoughts? thanks!

(or 22 on top of 42 and no molding, if your style is more modern. but still!)

So anything less than 30 inches is considered semi custom and custom with this company. These numbers were actually our idea in order to achieve stacked to ceiling while still staying in stock options and under budget. 42 18 and 6 molding would be ideal but would double our costs :/ this is the design they sent us which I don’t think looks bad. Was just hoping someone had come across this before.

Lascatz, Jeanne Kitchen and Lishaana- your kitchens are so pretty; what type of cabinets did you use? Sombreuil-- your paneling is GORGEOUS but way beyond my capability! MamaPapaPaige--I did price out custom cabinets from 2 separate cabinet makers. I got a quote for $14K from each which I know is not unreasonable, but I cannot justify spending that much. I have a large family and can only spend that much if one of the kids agrees not to go to college. Right now they refuse to agree that a pretty kitchen is more important than their education! They are SO unreasonable.

I think the tall cabs will be more functional, what would you do with the space above anyway? If you can afford the upcharge I would do the 42". In terms of width I'm not a fan of the big wide door - I think you will get a nicer look if you keep the doors fairly uniform in a cabinet run. All of the uppers in my Mom's L are 15" or 30" except for a 12" in the corner straight ahead. The sink base is 33" so the doors are 16.5" - everything hovers around the 15" mark (give or take 3"). I find big variances in width or lack of consistency in door size can make a space look very busy. I think playing with the height can have the same effect - depending on the kitchen its' size and style of course. Everyone's style is different but having not set out to keep things pretty uniform it has turned out to be one the things I like best about this kitchen.

There are plenty of semi custom cabinets available that offer a standard "stacked" wall cabinet- with one long and one short section- typical 45 and 48" total height-top opening of 12" 48 brings you to 9 1/2 ft nominal, leaving 6" for molding which is nice for a stack of molding. For instance looking at Showplace a stacked 3648 is about $215 more than a simple 3636 wall. Many brands that don't have a standard stack will "combine" cabinets - you pick the sizes(which will be available from 12-42" high in 3" increments) and they make them as a single cabinet. Costs doing it that way vary from brand to brand--from slightly more to quite a bit.

First, I think the 42/18 cabinet proportion works. But in general, I try to not take cabinets to a 10' ceiling. I did it in the photo I posted because they were spec houses and the builder wanted two different looks. I prefer the option where the cabinets do not go to the ceiling. I do not think the other option is as successful in regards to proportion (it feels top heavy). This is another example of where I took the cabinets to a 10' ceiling: I think this one is more successful because it's larger, has a mix of closed cabinets and open shelving and is balanced by a very large window. I think good scale and proportion can be overlooked in design in favor of the notion that cabinets HAVE to go to the ceiling. I would look at your plans and elevations with a critical eye to make sure you are choosing the best option for your space.

It IS bad. Find a different cabinet company. Id be curious as to which cabinet line they are designing in. And what your budget for this is. Most semi custom companies offer heights in 3” increments from 12” and up. Only very very cheap stock cabinets don’t offer a lot more flexibility than you’ve been offered.

How do you find a KD that isn't attached to a company? I am in the same situation as 'airebabe' and cannot find anyone that isn't attached to a cabinet company or kitchen contractors.

I called people listed as KD's from Houzz and they are all attached to contractors. We live in Florida and it's been a nightmare. When we lived in NYC, it was easy to hire a designer, pay them independently and shop for everything myself. Not possible here in Florida.

I don't want to intrude on 'airbabe' post, but everyone keeps recommending KD's but how do you find them?

There are several in my local NKBA chapter. You could start there. Or IDS. Or any number of design organizations. Or, the designer who designed our showroom is independent and does online design. Give her a yell. @The Cook's Kitchen She’s done work for several forum folks. There’s probably a few others as well.
