The "modern" British Colonial style

I read that the British Colonial style of decorating was a result of the traveled civil servant displaying keepsakes from foreign postings. I like the concept of displaying keepsakes from travels or interests more than I like the idea of creating a scene for someone else's travel experience. I have keepsakes from places: Central America, US Southwest, a favorite East Coast beach, Hawaii. I have keepsakes related to favorite plants: corn, sunflowers, iris, strawberries. I have keepsakes that I picked up locally: feathers, pinecones, seeds, rocks. And family keepsakes of many sorts. Some of these overlap: the East Coast beach and my Dad's things; the iris and my Mother's things; the Central American and corn things. Some don't seem to overlap.

I would like to hear stories of how other people overlap the themes of their own personal keepsakes in ways that evoke happy thoughts.
