Talk me out of it: Dish Dispenser

Hi I am doing a kitchen remodel and was thinking of adding a dish dispenser to the kitchen as shown below. I've never seen one in a residential kitchen. This makes me think that maybe I'm missing some downside of this gadget.

the pros are that you can use some space near the rear of your counter cabinets. also if you get a mobile one loading should be a cinch.

Is there some downside that I am not aware of?

The trend has been for people to start storing their dishes in drawers located in base cabinetry. I looked at as many posts as I could consume on this and decided that for my own small kitchen renovation with just 9 cabinets, my space was better utilized to put dishes in the upper cabinetry. However, if I had a larger kitchen, I would have probably made the switch to putting dishes in drawers. It seems to me that a spring dispenser might increase rubbing of dishes on each other and possibly noise. If neither of those things were a problem for you, then this might be something for you to consider. Another version of this idea is the plate racks usually located on the bottom area of wall cabinetry. They can be hard to dust, but some people love them and use them every day.

If you cant get them all in, as we have pretty much agreed is the best idea, you can knock together a sort of plant hotel that will get you through and be usefull in the future. I had a section of fence, between my house and my neighbors that was both very sheltered, unimproved, and sort of a micro climate. I rounded up some old boards. I had 4 2x6's available, and nailed them together in a rectangle shape that looked like a sort of empty window frame. Then I layed it down on the ground in my shady sheltered spot, and staple gunned a sheet of 6 mil plastic inside of it. (think inside fitted sheet) be sure to leave one corner with enough extra plastic that you can just weight it, not staple it, so that when you get rain you can tug this corner down so the whole thing can drain. then I set the plants in and I filled around them with part of an old rotted straw bale I had, you could use compost or what ever.this will both keep them cool and moist. I used this for an ill-timed family vacation to disny land, when we were having a heat wave at home and didnt loose a thing. later in the season, I tented it with more 6 mil plastic doubled in a lean too against the fence,(plastic down the fence side, too, all tucked in) and it made a great cold frame. this lasted several years, and I have thought often that altho I finished off that area and there isnt room for the hotel there any longer I should put one someplace else, because it really saved me over and over.

I saw it, I love it! It's antique, from TX (a plus for DH), PO had brought it up, new owner took it out has decorated condo contemporary. If I want it delivered I have to get it tomorrow though, since the DS is down from Boston with his huge Suburban. TV won't fit on the lower shelf in front of mirror (2" too tall!), so I'm thinking DR. Measured and I only need to take 1/8" off each horn of the window stools, or, since they're pine, I'm thinking replace the window stools and trim with oak, actually build it in by overlapping the window casing onto the back board rather than leaving 1/2" of paint b/t them? Or... put it on the garage wall at the head of the table, I'd center it on the chandy/table since then it would be centered b/t the wall outlets. Add another outlet in the middle for electric FP? We'd have to move the table and the chandy down toward the stairs a bit, the lower shelf on the mantel is 12" deep, I have 20" from wall to back of chair right now, 12" from wall to edge of rug. It really could help disguise the off-center sconce locations (with a little bit wider trim but it needs to be trimmed out after installation to hide screws - can see holes where it used to be installed). MBR is still a possibility - I always wanted a FP (would have to be electric) in the BR. Might be hard to get up the stairs at 80" tall. I just want it! It's got so much character, it has some scratches (incl 1 on the mirror) but it hasn't been stripped and refinished to look all shiny and new. Doesn't look bad for its age (unknown, but old), I'd leave it alone.

Something I laugh about, which was probably only funny the first time... Watching a baby nephew pick up his bowl and drink out of it. On the flat side. Everything poured out of the bowl corners on the sides of his little mouth. All down his sides, down the high chair and onto the floor. He cried because he didn't get any. Mine have a high-ish lip. I got them at Tuesday Morning a couple of years ago. I love the round bowls and plates beacuse they're bigger. The plates I seldom use, because I use the other set of Fitz & Floyd. I have huge serving pieces for the squares. One bunch could be chargers. I've served roasts on them. The others I are HUGE pasta or serving dishes. They're square, but they also have an inner square, where the depth of the piece is probaby 2" deep. They're cool, but I have no place to keep them. These came in a black, matte-like finish and I've found pieces for years since that were definately not of this Prasidio set, but were the exact same finish. I admit I keep picking things up, but nothing square. There were a few pieces in a taupe, called "mink" that I bought at that same time. That's what I really wanted, but at Tuesday Morning (all 7 of them in my area) you get what they have left. I've quit buying dishes, tho, unless I find some of my discontinued Fitz & Floyd. I've given away a couple of sets of things on Freecycle. I think it is OCD, because I live alone and don't entertain. Who needs cupboards and cupboards of dishes? Christine Formerly C F Muehling

Lots of great advice above. I especially like the emphasis on supporting individual artisans. That's how I justify my ginormous library fines: I am supporting the local library. For me, I often will have an amount in my head, beyond which an object just seems unreasonable to me, regardless of whether or not I can actually afford it. Currently, my own dilemma concerns a 4,000 range hood. For me, this is just not a reasonable amount to spend on a hood, no matter how much I love it. So, is there any conflict in your mind about spending for a faucet what you would spend for an excellent quality dishwasher? If not, then it will probably thrill you every time you turn it on. And who doesn't need a good thrill several times a day! If you go for it, check out Home and Stone. They seem to carry some versions of it for a teeny, weeny bit less. The only thing I wonder about is whether this faucet style goes with the mission style you described above (e.g. the oil rubbed bronze light fixure from Rejuvenation). Now, I'll be the first to admit that my design style is seriously lacking, so I could be totally wrong on this! But when I saw the rough hammered faucet, it made me think of my sister-in-law's upscale western style, "chic cowgirl" bathroom in Colorado. It doesn't read "Greene and Greene" to me. Maybe if you have a huge family or in-home school with 20+ children. Difficult to see this bringing value to a kitchen otherwise. What would you do to rotate through the plates?

Several of those things were supplied for drink cups at the movie theater where I work. They were never installed, tossed to a junk/storage area 36 years ago.

Unless you regularly host dozens of people, it solves a problem you don't have.

Some of the comments are a bit funny. They are an incredible overall space saver. They certainly don't take up extra space when compared to stacked plates. They do, however, remove counter space, which is more precious than cabinet space in most homes.

They are simple machines that work via springs and cause no more issues with weight than the same stack of dishes sitting on your countertop. Installed in a cabinet, you open up the cabinet when stuff falls in it and pick it up.

They are not used often in home kitchens because home kitchens value aesthetics over convenience and these are a minor convenience. Of all the ways you could make your kitchen more efficient these are simply one of the lowest returns on investment. Unless you are feeding a summer camp of kids the $750 (installed) cost could be put to better use in about a thousand different ways. You are much better off spending the money on convenience and organization features inside cabinets rather than getting this.
