How to paint this 1925 fireplace..

Hi everyone - we are doing a full house renovation on a 1925 Spanish and would love your input on painting this fireplace. Currently it is this orange color (it is more orange in person then it showing in the photographs) we are going more contemporary in paint but keeping the character of the wood floors and fixtures etc but I would love to paint the fireplace white however I do not want it to be sterile white which I am afraid might happen if we just paint it with the white wall color.

What I do like about the fireplace paint is the different dimensions in the color but have no idea what to search for or how to do this using white - do I just use two different whites and a sponge ??? (as you can tell no idea LOL)

This is an inspirational look for the feel of the home (but with more warmth in rugs and furniture but the contemporary feel of all white) but this fireplace is also painted white but has the wood mantle to warm it up ..

It has been previously painted? or it that the natural stone?

A good choice in a warm wall color can actually tone down the golden aspect of the stone.

The tile hearth is a lovely original, and consistent with the style of the house features.

Take care that your contemporary touches do mesh well with the 1925 Spanish soul of the house - it can be done, but requires thoughtfulness, other wise it will always feel a bit "wrong".

I do think it will require 2 or better 3 different shades, and I think the use of glazes along with the base paint. Google "creating a faux stone look" might bring up the technique for replicating the lovely multicolor aspect.

It has been painted and is starting to chip/peel and does have a crack that we will carefully repair.

Thank you for your help - I will go google now - any recommendations for shades (should they be different shades of white or incorporate others?)

Unless you totally hate the look, your home, particularly the dining room, is where I would splurge on some of that period wallpaper. But I adore Art Deco. You can also do suede or faux leather textures with paint or get suede or faux leather wallpaper for the bottom. I'd do the bottom wallpaper and the top wall I'd paint with a gorgeous wallpaper border so that I could hang my art on the upper wall. That top left look that Fori posted . . . ENVY!

I have to tell you that I really like the Knoxville Gray. Years ago, my next door neighbor and I painted our houses about the same time. We both chose almost the exact same palettes. Only she noticed - no one else and not even me until she pointed it out. Our house styles were different - her's Tudor and mine Dutch Colonial. We thought it was funny. If you still want to pick another, how about Caldwell Green? I would paint foam core boards, rather than the house and look at the colors from the street at different times of the day.

Hansen - I agree I don't like the screen either but it was a temporary fix to stop the cat from going up the chimney LOL I do know the firebox and hearth tile are original I am referring to the stone surround - it has been badly faux finished (painted the horrid orange color) We are getting ready to do a whole house remodel but want to keep as many features as we can so are just wondering about the actual surround if it is original or not (we will need to re-paint/re-finish to get rid of the orange paint) and I know it hasn't been used in many, many years Thank you everyone for your help - let me know if you have any more thoughts

Buy this book: Bungalow Kitchens by Jane Powell. I have a 1916 house and a kitchen that I (and everyone who visits) thinks is period appropriate without being a time frozen relic of another era. . LR and DR and sunroom floors are oak. We put maple floors in the kitchen because many houses of that era used lesser grade woods in non-public rooms. As mentioned by others, marmoleum would be a great choice (but it's not cheap.) We mixed original inset door birch cabinetry with cabinets we had custom made, and I put a few extra features on them like an attached shelf below the cabinets on some of the cabinets. Inset doors in a Shaker type look are what are most period appropriate. All of our cabinets are stained a honey tone to emulate the color that aged cabinetry has. Cabinets have the appearance of some legs rather than just straight, standard toe kicks. Cabinets are also different depths and different heights rather than the standard 24" deep and standard height cabinets that line every kitchen today. Crackle glaze white subway tile for the backsplash. I have a mix of soapstone and Carrara marble counters. I have a white cast iron sink with a drainboard (love it, love it). And, for the modern touch I have streamlined stainless appliances including a chimney hood. We did this almost 25 years ago and it doesn't look dated because it was done to be period appropriate. should they be different shades of white or incorporate others?

If I were doing it, I would be inclined to bring in small touches of warm gray or bronze to create more depth - but it that would depend really on what you are doing with your other painting. Warm tones regardless, to not fight with the tile hearth.

Whites come in such a range of tones, including extremely subtle blues, pinks, greens, grays, tans etc; and some labeled "white" are really pretty obviously a color (like many versions of "Navajo White" which actually might be a color to look at - it is different in every paint manufacturer's catalog) that just using different shades of white might give your desired effect.
