Major Wheeler Honeysuckle vine
Comments (20)Here is my ‘Major Wheeler’ at age 4 from a small rooted cutting, and it has just continued to get better. Covered with flowers in May, but continues to have blooms without a pause all season until frost, usually late October here. I prune it some to keep it to this size. I have had no disease or bug issues at all, but since I don’t know where you are spankgo, I don’t know how similar your experience might be to mine in central NH. The hummingbirds visit it all summer. I haven’t noticed any butterflies or moths visiting it, and as floral said this isn’t a bee plant. In warmer places it is semi-evergreen, but isn’t here, though some years it retains some old leaves over winter....See MoreMajor Wheeler Honeysuckle Vine
Comments (1)I think you made a good choice with Major Wheeler. It has everything you are looking for, disease resistant, about 10 long, bright red blooms all summer long. A magnet for hummingbirds as a bonus. It's happy to either climb or sprawl. You can't go wrong with this one!...See MoreMoving honeysuckle from wrong side of fence?
Comments (8)Roselee, The evergreen sumac is nice, though never thought we had space for one - don't they get pretty large? Sorry they didn't survive transplant well for you, but is good to know they don't favor moving if ever do get to pick a spot for one. Our 'Major Wheeler' gets full sun until ~3:00pm year-round. Have guessed that's likely why it gets much fuller than the yellow 'John Clayton' Lonicera sempervirens we have in considerably less light. Though both have dropped a lot of leaves and the late sporadic blooms since our mid-January hard freeze. Wantonamara, Okay - we do have a long enough extension cord, so if the sharpshooter doesn't cut it well, then the sawzall will. Thanks for the tip....See Morehummingbird attracting plants for spring and early summer?
Comments (21)@B T: I too am a huge, huge, fan of blue flowers or blue-purple flowers. In this context, I am ashamed to say, how much I dislike (read loathe) red and orange flowers. But I am sucking it up as I have become charmed or bewitched by these Hummingbirds. The reason I am trying to know a little about the above three Blue salvias is that at least one of them starts blooming earlier than the rest. I would like to start with that one. nevertheless, anyone of these plants will be a great addition to my garden just for looks alone. @gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9): Thank you for your continued knowledgeable and experienced input. I am very grateful. I do see how red and tube like flowers are irresistible to these birds. Trying to stick to perennials as much as doable I just got a Major Wheeler honeysuckle to plant in fall. Hopefully there will some flowers in spring. This honeysuckle supposedly blooms earliest and longest of all honeysuckles. Helas no scent. I am going to get the Hummingbird Plant, AKA Uruguayan Firecracker Plant or Dicliptera suberecta which should be an perennial for me and is like Cuphea. Hi! @Stephanie, 9b inland SoCal. How are you???! Thank you for introducing me to this new plant. Kangaroo Paw! 😂 In effect it seems it would be like the Firecracker Plant above. Are you specifically growing a Hummingbird garden? Thank you everyone!...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
