Back up and post a picture of the whole wall where the bed and nightstands are so people can see the scale. What is too large in the bare?

What are the other colors in your room?

I think glass or crystal lamps would look nice with the wood in there there. The one below has black on it, which would coordinate well if you did your vacation black and white photo art.

Because you already have the iron and the dark wood I think you need something that brings some lightness. Like a glossy glazed ceramic or toned own brass.

Keep the details of this chart in mind when you shop for lamps. Your bedside tables are a tad short but the lamp can make up for the bit of height.

I didn’t realize that my nightstands were shorter than normal. I think they’re 27.75 inches in height. Our mattress is a bit thicker but we will be replacing it that next year. I want the lamp to be tall enough to provide light when I read - but the again I’ll not sure that would be sufficient light and maybe I need to add a reading lamp as well?

My whole home is furnished with Mid Century Modern furniture and with the increased mattress thickness I have had to get creative. My home is an MCM ranch with 8' ceilings.

I just bought a mattress for my guest bedroom. When it was delivered I realized that with the standard box spring and frame the bed was higher than my butt cheeks. Way too high for a low ceiling home - higher than the window sill and just looked odd. (A friend who is a big guy (6'5") tried it out and said he felt like a little kid on the bed). I ended up taking the box spring apart and removing the risers between the upper and lower layers to get a bed that was an appropriate height for my home. They sell low profile box springs, but even with the low profile box spring the bed was high and I really needed it to be a 2" box spring vs a 4" (low profile) or 8" (Traditional) so that it fit with my furnishings.

In my master I bought nightstands that were originally designed to go with a platform bed. The set I bought only had the nightstands and 2 dressers. I paired it with a traditional headboard and the current mattress is just below the upper shelf instead of even with the lower shelf.

It isn't that your night stands are not standard, it is that the standard height of beds keeps getting taller and taller and taller, although my sister has antique Queen Anne Furniture and her beds are crazy tall, so I guess the height keeps changing from generation to generation.

I love reading in bed and think many bedside lamps just don't quite fit the bill.

I also love the idea of a floating shelf over the bed with lights

Currently I have bedside table lamps with swing arms - thought that would be the answer, but they still don't quite fit the bill.

I think the type of bedding you choose and the feel you want to have in the space will help determine your lamp style (although I don’t think the crystal lamps you like go well with your furniture).

No bedside lamp really fits the bill for reading in bed....you need something over the shoulder (like the shelf with pucks that Jennifer posted for reading).

I think a lamp with an adjustable head like the brass one I posted would help you to angle it when you read. you could also do two wall mounted reading lights on either side that hover above your nightstand.
