Attaching surface mounted deck railing posts

I'm planning to add surface mounted railing posts to our resurfaced deck and have a couple questions about attaching the posts. The posts are aluminum with a 5x5 plate welded to the bottom. Four holes are provided for attachment. Most brands suggest mounting the posts with long lag screws through the decking and into framing joists and/or blocking between the joists. Only a couple brands use a mounting plate under the deck with bolts and nuts. The mounting plate serves as a big washer to prevent the post from being ripped off the deck even with some pretty heavy force. As far as I can find, only Trex, Azek and Veranda (Home Depot) rely on these mounting plates. We're leaning toward Deckorators railing but they don't offer a mounting plate like this. I may be able to have something made locally. How do you attach surface mounted posts? Lag screws? Bolts? Do you use anything like a mounting plate underneath?

Thanks!
