Our Gentleman's Parlor is 18 by 18 with a walkway along one length. We have a nine by eleven area rug. I can't imagine having anything smaller. I agree with Patty to draw up a scale floor plan with the furniture placement before you buy a rug if you really want to buy a rug now. Personally from experience of building three homes I'd wait until you were in the home. You won't really have a feel for what works until you are in the home.

I have a second bedroom home office/music studio that I’m putting together, and I’m looking into area rugs but not sure on the right size. The room is roughly 10x12 (a little larger) with a desk facing the wall and a storage bench in the corner (not pictured) for clients on occasion. The center of the room will be left open for use as a music studio. Looking for ideas on rug size or color, and mostly wondering if the rub should extend under the desk or into the doorway.

8 x 14' 6" ........Why? You'll be exactly 18 inches from every wall. You can't make" an 8' remnant " any wider than 8' can you ? : )Nope. You can't. So it can't be 12 inches from the walls, it is already 18 inches from two walls. It's MATH kids. All you can fiddle with here is the length.

What size would you need for the edge of rug to be under the front legs of both sofas?
