I'm sure half and half will not look good!

I wanted ground cover between the paver extensions. I started out with Vinca.

Planted the whole area then half of it died. The tag on the Vinca said "Full Sun" . We have had a rather hot summer. I went to get more to replace the ones that died but couldn't find any.

I decided to put in Thyme in the sections that were bare. I put Elfin and Pink Chintz alternating.

My thought was after researching that Thyme would stay green and look nicer than the Vinca

during the winter. We do get some light snow. I went to get the thyme and bought as much as they had. I still needed so much more.

Now that it has cooled down a bit the Vinca is growing and so is the Thyme.

So my dilemma is should I just continue with the Thyme when I can get more and transplant the Vinca to a less sunny spot? It seems to be finally growing but I want something green in the winter.

Also if I understand , you can't plant anything else around the Vinca.

It isn't turning out how I envisioned. Need some constructive advice.

I would never grow vinca in full sun IMO a perfect shade plant. Thyme get really unruly unless cut back each fall almost to the ground so not very attractive, Have you gone to the garden center and spoken to someone who understands your climate and your situation IMO neither of those are good choices for where you want them

I would take your pictures to a local garden center. In addition to the sun, all of the rock/stone in your yard will increase the temp of the soil. Getting local advice is your best bet.

:) You guys, you cut me to the quick! It's my Charlie Brown tree. It was wonky and absolutely pitiful when i brought it home last year. By October, it had developed these wierd, gangly lower branches that were as wide as the tree was tall. So late winter/early spring, i sort of chopped those lower ones off a bit, in the hopes that it would assume a more balanced shape. It just hasn't leafed out yet. It will look better soon ... Do you think it's doomed? I'm determined not to give up on this tree. It was the only Tomcot in the nursery, and i just had to have it. Now, i'm going to love it tall. I have so much to learn. But overall, i'm pleased with the way the fruit trees are coming along. Am i just being overly optimistic? Blind to obvious problems? Anyway, thanks for your feedback everyone. It looks like two slightly opposing opinions about the pruning cuts so far. I hope i can save this tree ... :)

In my experience with my own seeded lawn, I have had success with a mixture of fertilizer and a watering on a normal schedule to help it fill in bare spots. As far as fertilizers go, I had great success last summer using a greens grade Lebanonturf product. I believe it was the country club 18-4-12. It is greens grade and will burn your turf if not watered in thoroughly. by far the best fert. I've used to date (1.5 years) to help thicken up turf. It is rather expensive and not easy to find though. other things I have used are your normal lesco 21-0-0...as well as stuff with some potash and potassium in it as we'll. organically, I have been very happy with alfalfa. alfalfa will probably be the way I go in the future after I am happy with the establishment of my lawn. It's cheap in my area and helps to put nutrients into my awful soil. basically patients, healthy schedule of watering, mowing (2/wk) and feeding as well as a good weed defense program is your best bet. Seed takes time, but it will get there. Check out the Bermuda bible if u haven't already.

It's like there here in North Georgia too. Probably not as hot (we rarely get to 100) but usually don't get that cold either. This winter was particularly bad. I had an arborist out to my home today to check on a dying pine tree. While he was here I showed him my cryptomeria and he said it was cold damage. Also I had 3 mini boxwood that died over the winter. I thought it was because I pruned them incorrectly last year, but he said it was the cold winter and that many strands of boxwood had the same thing. He also said that they are not dead and if I cut them way down, they would regrow. Hardiness zones are great, but mother nature doesn't have to pay attention to them.

I'd certainly stay away from anything (paint or counter top) that has even a HINT of pink in an undertone! the walls sometimes read pinkish on my screen. viewing the wall behind the vanity (reflection in mirror) does not read pinkish. It isn't unusual that the colors change with the change of the lighting tho. the mirror - that's a personal decision I think. whichever you like. I have a big mirror over my sink that I want to change - but it's old, cheap and ugly - lol! and it's also trimmed out in some tacky cheap wood. yours looks very nice tho. the faucets, lighting metal all look great to me. have you thought of another color to go with the green? I like purple with green myself. I have a comforter that is green with purplish in it. It does depend on the purple tho. maybe you should take one of your towels to the paint store with you and pick up some paint chips to check IN the room (for light changes)? the vanity counter now looks fine to me. Are you changing because you have to (changing sinks) or want to? A solid surface or granite would go nicely in there - just be very aware of the color, tones and undertones in whatever you pick out. I wouldn't go with a specific color like green granite in case you get the chance to change the bdrm carpet and want to move away from green. you could go with a green in paint tho - that's easy enough to change out if you switch away from the green.

Thyme needs full sun, excellent drainage and almost no water after establishment. And as long as you select the correct type - a very flat or creeping thyme - it never gets unruly or requires trimming. For a full sun location with those qualifiers, it would be my first choice....and it looks great with paving or rocks. Another choice is Veronica peduncularis 'Georgia Blue' but that will need regular water and does get some height and ranginess to it.

FWIW, the 'full sun' tag for the vinca was just wrong!! It can take partial sun (morning preferred) and varying degrees of shade to almost full shade. Its growth is very slow in full sun and the foliage tends to bleach out and look anemic.

gardengal that is exactly what I thought. We got the Vinca ( that was mismarked) at a box store

nursery. After months of almost no growth we did go to our local nursery where we had gotten our trees and they suggested the thyme. The problem is we can't get enough of it and the Vinca started to look good, What we had of it.

Would it work to transplant the vinca along the fence line area where there aren't any rocks? We really don't have much of a shady area. Also how would it look to plant some small shrubs in the area with the Thyme?

I'm sure half and half will not look good!
