1925 bungalow - kitchen remodel?
Comments (53)Thanks everyone! Looking at the shelf, one would think, 'gee...how hard is it to hang a shelf?..', but, I also was removing wallpaper, replastering, priming and painting. I bought the brackets from eBay (was outbid on some vintage Eastlake brackets...darn the luck!) and had to paint those white - once they arrived. I bought the wood at HD, sanded it, painted it, then hit it with a hand sander after the paint dried to 'antique' it and to remove the pointy corners that I would eventually smack my head on. Whatever they made the stud boards out of (cedar? granite?...kryptonite?..) broke my first drill bit. My first attempt, I miss measured and drilled holes too far apart and now had to fix the wall AGAIN. It was actually alot of work to hang this shelf. Much more work than they ever tell you on HDTV! I have another shelf and bracket set which I'm considering putting on the opposite wall. I don't want to over crowd the kitchen, but could use one more place to store items. PowerMuffin: wow - your not kidding! OUr kitchens are very similar! Personally, I cannot live without a dishwasher as I loathe doing dishes. Are your cabinets doors original? I always wondered what mine may have looked like as my cabinets are original but not the doors. I'm thinking of removing the doors and putting a fabric curtain below the sink. Then, for the cabinets on the right, removing the doors and adding wooden wine boxes into the cabinet. I would add pull out drawer brackets to the bottom of the wine boxes (install them as drawers, essentially). I like the French Provence look so I thought this might be cute. For now though, I need a rest from home improvement projects to gear up for painting all the trim in my house. To be clear, my house trim is already painted, but old and chipping...I'm not painting on beautiful old, virgin wood. It just needs a refresh....See MoreNeed exterior paint help for 1925 bungalow-esque house!
Comments (3)Oh, thanks! I like the white trim, too. I tend to prefer stronger colors (we painted the door blue, from a very blah brown), but a "neutral" tone would probably give more options for landscaping. I'm leaning towards ... BM Brewster Gray or something along those lines? (With a red door?) My husband is voting for a light tan....See More1925 bungalow exterior painted; tying it all together?
Comments (8)Thanks everybody! It makes me feel much better to know others like the color, too. Awm, I love the triple windows as well. That dormer has a built-in window seat with bench storage in the little room; there is so much potential there! I'll try to get a picture of the front steps and flowers, but my camera isn't cooperating right now. boysrus2, thanks for the compliment. It really did make a big difference to curb appeal. jakeabedy, thanks for the link; I love that bungalow. I so wanted to paint my sashes a deep red, and even tested it on several windows. The problem was that the porch is so dark that the windows disappeared when I tried it. It would have worked on the upper triple windows, but then the front door sidelights and downstairs windows would just dissolve into the black glass. I drove around the historic district and noted several painted sashes, but no one with a deep porch that pulled it off. We debated for a long time, but couldn't find any accent color that didn't just disappear in the darkness....See More1940s bungalow: please help me pick exterior colors ;)
Comments (16)Thanks everyone for the great tips. I'll drop the red trim idea. FWIW, here's an old picture before we repainted (pardon the car in the front, we'd just bought a Prius. Matches the trim of the house, lol). FWIW, I hated that bright red trim, though at Xmas the door looked pretty with a wreath. Brown Dog thanks for all the tips. (on the mock up, I ran out of time. I actually am supposed to be doing something else right now, now getting sucked into Houzz! ;) Thanks for the point of all the design elements fitting together. That's good advice. BTW, yes my gardening style is "controlled chaos." In that shot, the sweet peas were running a muck. ;) Another question: I am keeping these original windows but in the back, adding Marvin Ultimate (wood interior, alum exterior). The windows will be trimmed out to match the front. What color should I choose for the aluminum cladding in back/ I'm considering Coconut Cream, but there is Stone White or another ivory, Sierra White. thanks! https://www.marvin.com/our-products/options/exterior-finishes...See MoreChristina Kincaid
