Thoughts on Tide + Downy Free Liquid?

Hi everyone,

I saw Pat's thread on Tide PurClean Free but I wanted to get y'all's thoughts on Tide + Downy Free. Reading through the ingredients, it looks like it's free of OBs, but has enzymes + cellulase, but doesn't have any silicones or anything that would suggest "a touch of Downy" (so is it just the cellulase smoothing down cottons that's softening?).

What are your thoughts? To me, it sounds like exactly what I've been looking for; no OBs or fragrances, but with enzymes and cellulase for cottons.

I recently started using it and can affirm it does indeed make fabrics feel softer. I was hopeful it would also make some worn t-shirts look newer and have't noticed that yet.

Yeah, the 'Downy' part is kind of a gimik really. It is designed to remove the fibers, but can give a bit of softening effect as a result.

Yeah, makes sense. Guess that's good that it isn't leaving anything behind on my synthetics then!

Yeah, it was me. Our Miele Senior Tech, said that they see the most problems with people who use "green", plant based soaps and softeners. He said they gum up much easier, and are actually harder to rinse! He said of course Persil and Miele Care Collection have been tested the most in Miele machines, but most he detergents are fine. Actually, up until somewhat recently, Miele was listed on the back of Tide he, as a recommended and tested product! I use Persil Colour Gel and Ariel Gel mit ActiLift about 90% of the time. I recently picked up a HUGE bottle of Tide he liquid with a touch of Downy with ActiLift (it was on sale for $9.99...and is HUGE). I've done 3 loads with this he Tide liquid with Downy...and I am actually shocked how clean my clothes are. Smells great too. A soft version of Downy. I still use a little liquid Downy FS in the dispenser, but not too much since this detergent has Downy in it. Stains are gone, odors removed, soft clothes and smells really clean and soft!!

@CharterOps -- Where do you live in E TN? Back to the topic: Maybe I need to try the Sears detergent again; I didn't notice the 'fresh' smell everyone mentions when I tried it (which one should I try?). I've noticed the lack of 'freshness' with Tide, and just thought it was my nose. I've been using liquid Wisk HE with very good results, and fresher smelling clothes. I'm finishing a box of Tide powder HE, but do notice it's still not the same as the original Tide powder. For all of you who have detergents you don't want, consider donating to your local Animal Shelter, or even your local Vet's office. =)

emma darling - Suds-a-palooza queen here (raises hand). LOL Our FL uses so little water that correct dosing is essential. I've been using the All F&C powder for at least over a year with good results. I have to be careful with dosing, as I do with all laundry detergents. I recently tried some Tide F&C/Gentle powder and had similar good results. The Tide F&C/Gentle liquid works well, too. I use that on my dark clothing because it has no optical brighteners. Cheer powder works just as well and the scent is fairly light if it is dosed properly. No optical brighteners in that, either. No over-sudsing on any of the above products as long as I do not overdose. It is often so hard to believe that one Tablespoon of detergent is all I need. The mental calculation of laundry load size and amount of soil on the garments can not be put down on paper. Gah.

It's not just the scent changes they've made. I do use tide with bleach powder for bath and kitchen towels and free/gentle he turbo liquid for everything else. However they have screwed with the formulas and from the sound of it it's not he. I just get so frustrated at them. It took me a long time to find something that really worked without having to rinse a bazillion times.

I've been using it for the last few months, and I like it. I mainly use it for darks.

I was worried about which Downey they put in there. Actually happy with the gimik aspect, since FS isn't exactly my favorite thing.

Fabric softener is incompatible with detergent. Detergents that claim to be + softener likely are referring to the scent. IMO.

I think what dadoes said is true for most other formulas but there is no scent in this particular one. The cellulase smooths the fabrics, making them feel softer.

I have some scrubs that are starting to pill relatively bad (at least in my opinion). I purchased Tide with Downy Free to give it a shot. I will say I actually am impressed. I used a true 100ºF wash to give the enzymes their best chance. Cleaning was really good, the scrubs do have slightly less pilling, but do not look like new. Now, are they softer? Ehh. Not noticeably. I was afraid that there would be sudsing issues like there is with the regular Tide Free, but there was no issue.

Dorey, that’s been my experience with Tide with Downy Free. I just did my third wash with it last night and I am noticing less pilling on already pilled clothes and less signs of pilling on about-to-fuzz ones, but nothing dramatic. They’re a tad bit softer but only more than with some of the other free and clear liquids I’ve tried.
