80s house exterior revamp

Just bought this 80s style chocolate brown house. I don’t mind the angles but it’s definitely lacking curb appeal. The gravel will likely go to make room for yard. I love the look of dark houses in the woods and this lot has a ton of trees. Not sure what to do about the entrance. If anyone has any ideas or inspiration I would surely appreciate it. Thanks! :)

Clean the roof shingles. Lose the mushroom awning. Paint the door maybe a blue or a green. Stain the deck, steps and railing a darker brown and definitely deep 6 the gravel and add some landscaping.

2 pics of my 1980 brown house in case it helps you with yours..I personally hate gravel..I'd remove it and start planting..the pic with the red maple shows our old brown stain..the other pic shows the new darker stain..

I am no landscaping expert, but even something like this makes your entry more important. I'm sure that someone else will have some better ideas on how to improve this area and make it more welcoming. OK just saw the entrance image. Are we going for a contemporary home or an olde tyme cottage home?????? Have their been some changes to the original building?? The reason I ask is that I was getting ready to propose a contemporary garage door to go with your boulder stones. Which was do you want to go???

Romabio for your stone. The Classico is a lime wash. Romabio also has masonry paint that will give you a thicker coverage. I suggest you search out Romabio before and after (on stone facades) so you can see the transformations That pink stone around your garage is horrible w/the coloring of the house. I'd paint all of that in a heartbeat.

you could purchase windows for the one panel in that garage door. they are easily removed. I'd look into that. They also make a wood-look paint for garage doors. That might be worth a shot too. (lots of online tutorials for it) Accessories and landscaping are what's going to really make this exterior what you want. a new door is easy enough to find. heck, I just found a bunch of them on Craigslist. people selling vintage wood mcm style doors. or just get a 4 glass panel door in it's raw state. you can refinish it, or paint it yourself. get some modern numbers, spray them if needed, attach them to a nice piece of finished wood and make your own placque get some decent looking exterior lightes. spruce up the front porch area and flower beds. Look at modern style front yards and see what you can replicate w/yours. (and yes, if you can swing, get rid of that box! )

Your landscaping is beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration. I had initially thought of going with a shade of black for the exterior but I love your dark brown house.

I agree with Millworkman that getting rid of the awning over the door would be a good idea. I would find attractive lights to go on either side of the entrance door. Staining the deck a darker color would work nicely with your window trim. Personally, I would think about replacing the railing and the criss-cross screening material with something more attractive. The diagonal lines of the house are so striking that the different angle of the screening seems to me to detract from it. You are right that getting rid of the gravel and adding landscaping will make a dramatic difference. I like the short stone retainer that Dig Doug suggested, but would keep your plantings simpler to be in harmony with your house. Enjoy your lovely new home.
