How can I bring my dining table back to its original glory?

Hello,

My table has taken a beating from my kids (water stains, nail polish remover, slime) and I would like to fix. Does anyone know what needs to be done to fix? Who do I call?

It looks like a certain area lost its shine. I was originally thinking I would lighten the whole table but is is more cost effective to keep the same stain so I wouldn’t have to do the legs which are fine. Thanks for your guidance!

Remove the existing table top finish and stain in color desired. You can do this yourself or send it to a furniture refinisher.

You don’t think it would look weird to have a different stain on top than on bottom?

You all might want to check out the difference between morning glories and field and hedge bindweed. Bindweed, which looks an awful lot like small morning glories, is pretty nearly impossible to eradicate, once established, even with Roundup. It has been found quite alive with roots buried many feet underground for 20 years. The problem is that the two vine-varieties can cross-pollinate resulting in great vigor. While true morning glories can be eradicated with treatment like careful uprooting and seed-pod destruction, nobody has found a way to successfully eradicate bindweed once it gets established on a widespread basis in a field or other large area. So, njmomma, you won't get much support from gardeners who've had to deal with bindweed or crosses of bindweed with morning glories. MGs can be lovely, with all those colors, but I'll just enjoy the pictures. I've been battling bindweed for years at this location where I'm living now.

I don't that the two week head start is sufficient. You probably need to start 5 to 6 weeks in advance. It will take a heavy saturating irrigation for about 3 to 4 weeks to get it rolling, and a couple of weeks to keep it there. You will need to reduce irrigation the final week so that the soil is not mushy. I'm not sure if you mean it's just dormant, or kind of tan. You did say "green up", and to me, that implies some off-green or yellow. Especially since you said "nicer if the lawn was green". Based on what you wrote, I'd suggest watering very substantially. Watering about 4 to 5 days per week should do the trick. And twice as much as you mentioned, for at least the next 3 weeks. Then 4 to 5 days at maybe an inch per week. I worked at 6 golf courses and country clubs around Portland, and remember how much water we had to apply to keep turf green, or get it to recover.

thanks, bpathome! Those centered door knobs have never made sense to me - ergonomically nonsensical. When the work crew was here doing the work, I got a peek at the front door opening when the old door was out, and I was able to see that the house initially had a double door. I wish I knew what it looked like. I wouldn't have gone back to a double door, but I'd love to see what was originally there. We bought the house from it's second owner, and they renovated extensively, taking the house in a more traditional, colonial direction, which we're now trying to undo. I'll be sharing more pics of the interior soon - I have lots of projects planned, and definitely want the feedback of this forum!

How can I restore my black wood dining room table?

I've been using a product called Old Masters Gel Stain and really getting great results. I would use a very fine grit sand paper first, just to get a tiny bit of tooth to the surface to accept the stain and then follow the instructions on the can. I colored 4 cherry chairs with walnut and they turned out beautifully, rich and dark. Scrape the table to bare wood and refinish. Don't use sandpaper, and use aniline water based stains for the refinish with shellac secondary coats, finish with a poly topcoat. If you don't know how to do this, best to have it done professionally.

I think it would look very odd to have the top and the bottom finished in a different stain.
You can try a "quick and dirty" fix and if that doesn't fix it to your satisfaction, then do a full refinish. Try mixing 2/3 shellac thinner with 1/3 lacquer thinner and, in a small area at a time, brush it on....let it sit for about a minute and wipe with a paper towel. Do in a well ventilated place, and be careful not to drip the solution on other parts of the table...if it does drip let it dry in place and do not try to wipe it.
When it is all even looking, then finish with 2 coats of polyurethane varnish.

If you choose same color stain as the original table color, the top and bottom would be same color.
